Desperation weekend brought no changes to the book, so the standings are pretty much the field we will see when the nominations become entries a few days before the KYD running. I am not sure what the set-up is now for fillies in the race. Previously, there had been an allowance for the entry of two fillies in the race, if they had the earnings. This year, HRP has listed fillies which have competed in open company in the TC Qualifying list. Obviously,
Rouge
River Stables Mai Mia Bambina is in. If HRP still allows one other filly, any of the top ten fillies on the list could jump in and change the picture. The only thing I know for sure is that neither or my two fillies will be approaching the entry box for the KYD. Funky Music has every intention of providing
Paradise Stable its second straight KY Oaks victory and Jersey Dream is heading elsewhere.
Ken Allan, owner of 10-1 Laffin Hyena, apparently decided the bloodline was not impressive enough and the fading third place finish in the SA Derby was an indicator that the horse needed to lighten up for the extra distance of the KYD and set Pablo loose with a pair of scissors on the horse. He certainly could not have been bothered by the then colts latest three furlong test which went in a sparkling :33 2/5 bullet of seven on the ninth.
Barcelona Farms 9-2 favourite
Crown Heights set tongues wagging with a 1:11 1/5 breeze over the CD course to compliment his handy 1:10 2/5 work at GP back on March 24. Ken Allans other KYD runner, Plucky Mach, improved his personal best at a mile with a 1:38 1/5 bullet at GP on the 17th after testing his turf chops with an impressive 1:36 2/5 bullet a week before.
Paradise Stables Sabers Edge improved his mile record to a relatively unimpressive 1:39 bullet at OP prior to his runner-up performance in the BG Stakes at KEE causing stable trainer Silky White to hint that the horse may not see the Derby starting gate. With the realization that horse races are run in the afternoon, White will likely be more impressed by that race than the work. Drabfantasys Wood Memorial runner-up, Iditarod Diademe, nudged his personal best mile up a fifth with a1:38 3/5 bullet at WO a couple of days ago, looking much like he was ready for the big show, although he might want to come down out of the cold and join the preparing group in Kentucky.
