Running The Rail
Derby Week at CD
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hopefully by this time in the month everyone is in that " cant wait till Saturday " mode here at CD as the anticipation grows to see who will grace the Run for the Roses. Already as of Sunday, nineteen owners have posted twenty six entries for a field of twenty starters. Tuesday the 27th will be the day that the field will be released, and the talk will all be a buzz. A definite must will be Cozman's rundown of the field for Saturday and as always, his review should be an in depth look at this seasons group.
The day will feature fourteen races on the card, with some top notch events consisting of the Gr. III Eight Belles named for a horse that was all heart. Then the Gr. II CD Distaff Turf Mile for three plus fillies and mares, followed by the $250 CD going seven eights on the dirt. The final three races will be the Gr. I Humana Distaff, Gr. I Woodford Turf Classic and finally the Kentucky Derby.
This week I take a look at how the sophomores did this past weekend in some final events leading up to the Derby, as well as works this past week. The following list reflects the horses named on the Paradise Casino KYD Future Books list as of April 24th 2010.

As many would like to predict, it seems that the Gr. I FL Derby winner Five Fives should go the odds on favorite come post time. His recent work of 1:38.1 breezing looks to make him a natural to handle this CD course, and although the course will see considerable rain over the next few days, the sunny conditions predicted for Thursday and Friday should have the course in top condition come race time.
Other interesting works of note this past weekend have come from Maverick Racing's Bull Run who was out in a nice breeze going five eights in a minute and one fifth. The Gr. I AR Derby runner-up may just have something to say about the outcome on Saturday. He came to that event with three straight Graded titles and was closing down the lane, so he should appreciate the extra furlong in distance.
The Gr. II Lanes End winner Nitro from Manco Segundo has been resting since mid March and he posted a nice 1:00.3 handily here last Tuesday which was the top effort for eight starters that morning, but then four of those efforts were from juveniles. His sire has produced some nice multiple Graded stakes winners. Recent Gr. III Withers winner Allfusionallthetime from Eastern Equine will be making the quick turn around if he gets the opportunity to race on Saturday, but back in seven is just too difficult a task in my opinion. Though his sire won the Derby three years ago, he seems to be a miler at best and may miss all three events. He did win the Withers by some four lengths, but he was closing against a much slower twenty five second final quarter.
The Big question? What about Mrs Bombastic? The Blushing Meadows filly captured the Gr. I AR Derby by a half length over a colt that many think can make a run at the title. She won the SA Oaks by some four lengths and has already accumulated a World Ranking of 121 todate. She has done well on both fast or off tracks, so I think she deserves a chance. Many say that the fillies have no chance against the tougher boys on the track and she will get bounced around, but I think this filly has the tenacity to run with the best.
Let us not forget recent Gr. I Blue Grass Stakes winner Shanghai Mystery, also from Blushing Meadows who had some speed to deal with in that event. Gr. I SA Derby winner Prophet from GlueFactory who many feels has the the westcoast beat, think he will find a different game out east. Let us not forget that he beat some of these contenders in last years Gr. I LE Breeders Futurity out here at KEE going a mile and a sixteenth I think if we take a look at last years BC Juvenile event, we may very well see the top five finisher from that event take the top five spots on Saturday. The only question will be the order of finish.
Let me close by saying best wishes to all those entries who get a shot at history, for many its a dream, but for one runner this season, the dream will become a reality, and the glory with live on forever.
From the Rail
I'm Mc.D.
