RACE 2 HOO IND Derby (GII)
$500.000 3yo 1 1/16m Main Track
I just hate that - say "give him a hard look" and then leave him off of the ticket... my loss... Anyway, disptached at 12/1 odds, Power Work's Don B proved that you don't have to be a seasoned TC horse to win a Derby. Staying close to the pace throughout this one, the black colt took the 2010 IND Derby (GII) on a rainy, wet track, getting the mile and a sixteenth in 1:45 and one, while taking the victory by a neck over a hard closing First One and race favorite Allfusionallthetime in third.
The nine sophomores made their way to the gate on this dreary, soggy evening and as they got away Freddy The Freeloadr showed speed from the middle of the track, Don B along the rail, Fat Nick and Danzest Dancer between those two. First One was just in behind that foursome, Jas Carrot and Marquee Player formed a line of three, Maximum Flame between that pair and Allfusionallthetime was off a step slow.
Past the stands the first time by and now into the clubhouse turn, they had six furlongs to run and Freddy The Freeloadr had a length and a half advantage on Don B. Fat Nick was just in behind that one, Jasper Carrot three wide, then a length back to Maiximum Flame and First One on the rail.Danzest Dancer was a length back, two more to Marquee Player and Allfusionallthetime was last, nine lengths from the leader.
Now moving down the backside and into the far turn, they had three furlongs to run, Freddy The Freeloadr continued to show the way by a length. Don B and Fat Nick were pressing the issue a bit then a length and a half to Jasper Carrot. First One to the insde of that one, Maximum Flame to the outside, then a gap of two back to Marquee Player, well off of the rail, Marquee Player towards the inside and Allfusionallthetime continued to trail.
Swing around the far turn to the top of the lane, the field made their way past the furlong marker and Don B moved up quickly to take the lead. Freddy The Freeloadr was looking a bit leg weary from his pace setting, FIrst One now moving up quickly and Fat Nick between horses. Jasper Carrot felt the whip, and Allfusionallthetime was now in gear and flying from the far outside. The remainder had a lot of work to do and not much time to get it done.
Inside the final 150-yards and down to the wire, Don B was all out as First One was inching forward with every stride... and now Allfusionallthetime was gaining quickly from the middle of the track. But as they went under the wire, J K Court kept Don B's mind at his work and they went under the wire in front by a neck. First One was a game second, then a length back to Allfusionallthetime, just nosing out Freddy The Freeloadr for third. Fat Nick was fifth, Danzest Dancer, Marquee Player in seventh, Jasper Carrot and Maximum Flame closed out the field.
Don B is a 3yo black colt by HRP-Deputy Commander - HRP-Alablue, by HRP-Blue Larkspur, and he was bred in KY by his owner, Power Work. He now has three wins from his six starts, including a pair of GII wins, and earnings of $550.400.

RECAP Don B was away well, sat just behind the pace to the top of the lane, moved up to take over and held off a late charge from First One. First One rated back while under a hold, asked and responded entering the stretch, just missed in a game effort. Allfusionallthetime off a step slow, no speed for seven furlongs, swung out for the drive, best foot to late. Freddy The Freeloadr sent from the gate, set the pace to the top of the lane, evenly from there. Fat Nick was just behind the leader mid-way on the far turn, tired. Danzest Dancer raced evenly throughout, not a factor. Marquee Player was outrun. Jasper Carrot sat just behind the pace for six furlongs, tired. Maximum Flame was up close early, nothing left for the drive.
