RACE 10  HOO   IND Derby (GII)
$500.000  3yo    1 1/16m   Main Track

My inability to pick a winner was kept alive here, as Break Dancer proved that he still has a bit of that spring-time magic in his legs, but it took a long stretch drive and a photo to figure this one out.  In the end, the Diablo Diablo trained colt was shown to be just a head in front of Qowkacola and the winner of the 2009 IND Derby (GII), here at HOO.

The field of seven went to the post with the capacity crowd cheering this fine group of sophomores, and as they got away from the gate, Sweet Talking Jed and Flextime were away quickly in this one.  A length back, Pavarotti gave chase, wth Qowkacola along the rail, and Break Dancer back towards the middle of the track.  Slow Lane was squeezed back a bit, with Social Reject from the far outside.

Under the wire the first time by and now midway on the clubhouse turn, there were six furlongs to run and Sweet Talking Jed had a neck in front of Flextime, as that pair set the early pace.  Break Dancer was two lengths back along the rail, then Pavarotti, a length behind that one.  Qowkacola was two and a half length back with Social Reject and Slow Lane making up the trailing trio.

Down the backside and heading into the far turn, there were three furlongs to run and things were heating up on the front end as Sweet Talking Jed and Flextime were looking each other right in the eye, but Break Dancer was moving into contention with a head of steam.  Two more back, Pavarotti was being asked to find a bit more, as Social Reject moved up, but was three wide.  Qowkacola was between that pair with Slow Lane another half length back.

Around the far turn and headed by the three-sixteenths pole, it was time to dig deep if you wanted to be involved in this one.  Flextime and Break Dancer had Sweet Talking Jed caught between horses, as that trio took swings at each other.  At the same time, the trio of Pavarotti, Qowkacola and Slow Lane were lined as Social Reject drifted back to the trailing position.

Inside the final 150-yards and down to the line, Break Dancer and Flextime were all out and in a flash, Qowkacola joined that pair.  As they went under the wire, Break Dancer as not to be denied and took this one by a head.  Qowkacola just missed in a very game try, with Flextime getting the show.  Sweet Talkin Jed was able to hold on to the minor money, then Pavarotti, Slow Lane in sixth and Social Reject closed this one out.

Break Dancer is a 3yo chestnut colt by Hokeykokey28 - Killer Jinx, by Hi Jinx City, and was bred by his owner, Diablo Diablo, in NJ.  This was his sixth win from sixteen starts, and his first win since Apr (Wood Memorial), so it is certainly great to see this one back in the winner's circle.  He now posts lifetime earnings of $1,360.200, with $921.000 coming from this season.

$2 Mutuel Prices:
3 - Break Dancer 9.90 4.80 3.30
1 - Qowkacola   5.60 3.80
4 - Flextime     4.60
Track: Fast
Time: :232  :472  1:112  1:422
$1 Exacta: 3 - 1 Paid 22.20    $1 Trifecta: 3 - 1 - 4 Paid 363.70

Scratched: None

RECAP   Break Dancer broke well, stayed just behind the pace, moved forward inside the three-sixteenth's pole, all out for the victory.  Qowkacola settled back early, while being rated, steady push through the lane, just missed while closing quickly in the late stages. Flextime pressed the pace, brief lead entering the stretch, out-finished. Sweet Talking Jed, away alertly, set the pace under pressure, tired. Pavarotti gave an even effort. Slow Lane was never involved, outrun. Social Reject was outrun.
