Sun Power Stakes
10/22/11 Hawthorne Race Course
Two-Year-Old Colts and Geldings
Six Furlongs on the Dirt
Purse: $100.000
Hawthorne will play host to the third running of the $100.000
Sun Power Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings, run at
6F over the dirt on Saturday.
Ths Sun Power was last run in 2009, and after no race last year,
it is back at Hawthorne, with the 2011 edition featuring just a small
field of four. None of the four colts headed to the post are stakes
winners yet, but Saturday that will change, as one of them will be
coming home with their first stakes win.
Lincoln Duncan will be making his first start for trainer Kopites, who
purchased this colt for $130.000 just a few days ago on 10/17/11,
from Mb Stables. This son of HRP-New Providence finished 2nd last
time out in the $100.000 Birdonthewire Stakes, just missing the win
by a head after leading the entire 6F race over the Calder dirt, and
getting edged out right at the wire.
Spearfire Lad trained by Riggins Racing is also coming off of a near
miss, as he finished 2nd by a nose in the $100.000 LA Stallion Stakes
at Louisiana Downs, run at 7F on dirt on 9/24/11.
While Lincoln Duncan and Spearfire Lad look tough in the Sun Power,
they must first get by Saratoga Holiday and Bungalow Candy, who are
both ready to run big races in hopes of leaving Hawthorne as stakes
winners. Get ready for another great two-year-old race, as these colts
get ready to run their hearts out in the 2011 Sun Power Stakes!

1 Spearfire Lad: Trained by Riggins Racing, this colt
by HRP-Herbager will be making his 2nd stakes start,
and looking for his first stakes win.
Comes out of the $100.000 LA Stallion Showcase
Stakes for LA Breds, where he was 2nd, missing the
win by just a nose in the 7F race over the LAD dirt.
He equaled a career high 89 speed figure in that race
which he has now run earned twice. The LA Stallion
Showcase was 7F, and Spearfire Lad was closing at
the end, so the 6F here might not be enough distance.
Has an allowance race on the turf, and a recent work
at one mile over the grass in a sharp 1:36.38, so he
may run better on turf, going longer.
-Spearfire Lad has been running really well in his short
career, with a record of 4-2-2-0, and after his near miss
last time out, he could be a big threat in the Sun Power.
A little worried distance may not be enough for him, but
think he should do well in this field.
2 Lincoln Duncan: This colt by HRP-New Providence will
make his first start here, for trainer Kopites, who bought
the colt just a few days ago, on 10/17/11, for $130.000.
This is going to be his 2nd stakes start, and he looks to
get his first stakes win here.
Last time out, on 10/1/11, Lincoln Duncan finished 2nd,
by a head in the $100.000 Birdonthewire Stakes, run at
this distance of 6F on dirt at Calder. He posted a career
best 93 speed figure in that race, and led all the way to
just before the wire, where he was caught, and finished
a head back in 2nd. Prior to that race he had only run at
MNR, and broke his maiden in a 4 1/2F turf MSW, 9/6/11.
Worked 6F over the dirt at FPX on 9/22/11 in 1:11.46.
-Just missed at this distance in his stakes debut in his
last start. He led that race until the end, tiring slightly to
be passed just before the wire, so Lincoln Duncan may
need to sit off the pace a bit here, so he has something
left for the end. Off to a great start, he looks like he may
be very dangerous here Saturday.
3 Saratoga Holiday: Trained by Captinj, this colt by Spa
Racer will be making his 2nd stakes start here Saturday,
and looks for his first stakes win.
Comes off of a 9th place finish last time out on 8/15/11,
in the 6 1/2F dirt Grade II SAR Special, run at Saratoga,
where he earned a career high 93 speed figure. Saratoga
Holiday broke his maiden at this distance on 7/17/11, in a
$55.900 MSW at Woodbine, for ON Breds, finishing the 6F
race over dirt in time of 1:10.55. Worked 6F over the dirt
at Belmont Park on 10/1/11 in 1:12 flat.
-Has only the maiden win, which was his only in the money
finish in his three career starts. While the Grade II SAR
Special proved too tough for him, the drop in class here,
and the fact his maiden win came at this distance, means
he could run a big race here. One to watch.
4 Bungalow Candy: Trained by Running Farms, this colt by
Bungalow Eight will be making his stakes debut in the Sun
Power on Saturday.
In his last start, Bungalow Candy finished 2nd in a 6 1/2F
dirt $43.000 Allowance at Saratoga on 8/29/11, where he
posted a career high speed figure of 89. Prior to that race,
on 7/23/11, he broke his maiden at Saratoga, in a 5 1/2F
dirt $35.000 Maiden Claiming race. On 9/13/11, he posted
a 6F work over the Belmont dirt in 1:12 flat, going handily.
-In his last start, the 6 1/2F looked a little longer than what
Bungalow Candy wanted to run, so the cut back in distance
here to 6F on dirt looks like it will be a good fit. Has great
looking conformation, and although he is the only colt in the
field without any prior stakes experience, look for him to put
in a big effort on Saturday.
