SSM Classic
1/28/12 Gulfstream Park
Four-Year-Olds & Up FL Breds
1 1/8 Over the Dirt
Purse: $400.000
Saturday Gulfstream Park will host the 9th running of the $400.000
SSM Classic, which drew a field of five veterans, three of whom ran
in this 1 1/8 race last year.
Allfusionallthetime trained by Eastern Equine has a strong connection
to the SSM Classic, as he was the runner up in this race one year ago,
and in 2008, his sire Fusion won this race. He looks like he has a great
shot to follow in his dad's hoof prints as he makes his 20th career stakes
start here, and has five stakes wins, four of them coming in graded stakes.
Allfusionallthetime is coming off of an almost three month layoff, having
run last in the Grade I BC Classic in November, where he finished 4th. He
could be very dangerous here, coming in fresh, and he has posted some
really sharp works of late.
Another horse with a big chance in the SSM Classic is TwinTowersRacing
trainee Siberian Shooter. He too has four graded stakes wins, and has won
his last two stakes races, the most recent being the Grade I BC Dirt Mile on
11/5/11. While Siberian Shooter has struggled with distance in some of his
starts, he does have a graded stakes win at this distance that came in the
Grade II Suburban Handicap last summer. He starts from post 1 Saturday,
which as we have seen lately has been a problem many horses; but in this
case could be a benefit to Siberian Shooter if it will slow him down early.
Condottiere trained by Maverick Racing finished 5th in the SSM Classic last
year at age four, and is back to give this race another go Saturday. He has
two stakes wins, including his last start back on 11/12/11, when he won the
$150.000 Rose Handicap for FL State Breds, which was run at this distance
over the Calder dirt.
Larry Lehew, who was 3rd in this race in 2011 is also back, and this is going
to be the now six-year-old gelding's 32nd career start. He is sent out by trainer
First Flight Stables, and has one career stakes race, which came in December
of 2010 at age four, when he won the Grade III Hooper Handicap, run at 1 1/8
over the dirt.
The youngest horse in the field is four-year-old Crazy Gnarls who is trained
by Dynark Stables. This will be his 7th stakes race, and he is looking for his
first stakes win Saturday. He has two 2nd place finishes in ungraded stakes,
and is coming off of a win seventeen days ago here at Gulfstream, in a one
mile dirt $80.000 Optional Claiming race for FL State Breds.

1 Siberian Shooter: Trained by TwinTowersRacing, this son of
Siberian Hope is a five-year-old horse, and he makes his 11th
stakes start Saturday, and has four stakes wins, all of them
graded.
Last ran 12/26/11 at FG, in a $53.000 Allowance, run at one
mile and seventy yards on dirt. Siberian Shooter finished in
2nd in that race, and looked like distance was a bit long as
he was losing a bit of ground near the end. Prior to that, he
won the 2011 Grade I BC Dirt Mile race, and three races
back, won the Grade II Kelso, also at one mile over the dirt
and he earned a career high 104 speed figure in the race.
-Best races lately have been at one mile, and has had some
issued in past starts with distance, where he tires before the
wire. However, he won the Grade II Suburban Handicap last
July at 1 1/8, and in this field, think he should do really well.
2 Crazy Gnarls: Trained by Dynark Stables, this four-year-old
colt by Gfw 85 is starting in his 7th stakes race Saturday, and
is looking for his first career stakes win.
Coming off of a win last time out, seventeen days ago here at
Gulfstream, when Crazy Gnarls won a one mile dirt $80.000
Optional Claiming race for State Breds. Prior to that, he won
a $62.500 Optional Claiming race, also here at GP on 12/16/11
for FL Breds, and that race was at this distance on dirt. Has
two second place stakes finishes, both which were run at this
1 1/8 distance on dirt, and in both he was tiring just before the
wire and losing ground.
-Has won his last two races in a row, including one at this 1 1/8
distance, but both wins came in State Bred Optional Claiming
races with small fields of just four horses. In his two most recent
stakes, this distance proved to be a bit long for Crazy Gnarls, so
this could be a tough spot for him as he looks for his first stakes
victory.
3 Allfusionallthetime: Trained by Eastern Equine, this five-year-old
horse is by Fusion, who won this race in 2008. Was runner up in
this race last year; he makes his amazing 20th stakes start here
Saturday, and has five stakes wins, four of them graded.
Has had an almost three month vacation, after having last run on
11/5/11 in the Grade I BC Classic, where Allfusionallthetime was
4th in the 1 1/4 race over the Churchill Downs dirt. Two starts back,
on 9/3/11, he was 2nd in the Grade I Woodward at this distance,
and earned a whopping career best 107 speed figure. Prior to the
Woodward, he won three graded stakes in a row from March to
July of 2011, and one of those came in the Grade II NO Handicap
run over the Fair Grounds dirt at this 1 1/8 distance.
-Has had a nice break after his run in the BC Classic, and recent
works have been sharp, making Allfusionallthetime look like he is
going to be tough one to beat Saturday. He was 2nd in this race
in 2011, and could be poised to follow his sire Fusion's hoof prints
by winning the 2012 SSM Classic.
4 Condottiere: Trained by Maverick Racing, this five-year-old horse
by BomBayMedic will be making his 9th start in stakes company
Saturday, and has two stakes wins, one of them graded and both
at this distance. He was 5th last year in the 2011 SSM Classic.
Coming into this race after winning his last start, on 11/12/11 in
the $150.000 Rose Handicap, run at this distance on the dirt at
Calder. Condottiere won that race by an impressive four lengths
and finished the race in a sharp final time of 1:47.91. His graded
stakes win was also at this 1 1/8 distance on dirt, when he won
the Grade III BC Derby over a track listed as good at HST in
September of 2010 at age three.
-Won a stakes race last in his start, and both career stakes wins
were on dirt at the SSM Classic distance. Has had 2 1/2 month
layoff since his $150.000 Rose Handicap win last November, and
though his works have been a bit slow lately, he could run very
well here in his five-year-old debut. Watch him closely Saturday.
5 Larry Lehew: Trained by First Flight Stables, this six-year-old
gelding by Pounds of Sin finished 3rd in the 2011 SSM Classic.
This will be his 12th stakes start, and he has one stakes win,
which came in 2010 as a four-year-old, in the Grade III Hopper
Handicap at this 1 1/8 distance over dirt.
Since his stakes win back in December of 2010, Larry Lehew
has struggled, only finishing in the money in two of seven starts,
one of those coming in his most recent start on 11/26/11, when
he finished 3rd 11/26/11 in a 1 1/16 dirt $34.500 Allowance race
at Calder Race Course. His only other in the money finish of 2011
was in this race one year ago, where he was 3rd behind the winner
Madhouse, and 2nd place Allfusionallthetime, the 3 horse in this
race Saturday.
-This will be the 32nd lifetime start for Larry Lehew, and his recent
works have been a bit slower than what they were when he was
younger. In 2011, his speed figures on average we lower than they
had been in 2010, and with only hitting the board three times last
year, you have to wonder if the six-year-old is nearing the end of
his career. Think this could be a tough spot for him Saturday, but
he gets the advantage of breaking from the outside 5 post.
