Jerry Garcia Racing scored a big double Sunday at Gulfstream Park,
winning both feature races; graded stakes for three-year-olds. His filly
Queen Lyphard won the $200.000 Grade II Forward Gal Stakes, then
in the very next race, colt Condottieri won the $400.000 Grade III Holy
Bull. On top of that, both Queen Lyphard and Condottieri set new
stakes records in their respected races.
Both these talented three-year-olds have more in common than just their
trainer, as both are homebreds by the Jerry Garcia Racing sire Il Miglio
Fabro. This multiple graded stakes winning son of The Maestro, stood
the last two breeding quarters for a reasonable stud fee of $15.000, and
for those breeders who got a cover, consider yourselves lucky. His value
no doubt shot up after his two foals Sunday won graded stakes races just
twenty minutes apart, and it's a safe bet we will not see Il Miglio Fabro's
stud fee at that price again anytime soon.
After the scratch of the 4 horse, Larkhill Lucille, a field of six started in
the Grade II Forward Gal Stakes, and Queen Lyphard reigned supreme,
running a beautiful race for the win in stakes record setting time of 1:22.42
for the 7 furlong race over the fast Gulfstream dirt track. She ran just off the
pace in 2nd all the way until the 3/4 mark of the race, when she was took the
lead and was able to hold off the late closing Knights Princess who finished
2nd, and Flash Me Force who came home 3rd, one length back.
Summer Apple, who came into the race having won six of seven career
starts, four of those graded stakes, seemed to succumb to the high weight
of 125 pounds she carried, which was four more than the rest of the field.
After the quarter pole, she was beginning to tire, and by the 1/2 mile had
dropped back to trail the field, then finished last, five lengths back in 6th.
Queen Lyphard trained by Jerry Garcia Racing, is a three-year-old filly by
Il Miglio Fabro, and for ger Grade II Forward Gal Stakes win, she earned
$120.000, giving her lifetime earnings of $643.470, and a race record that is
now 7-3-0-2.
Knights Princess finished 2nd, taking home $40.000 in her first start for
trainer Pan Farms, while Flash Me Force trained by Ekli Stables came in
3rd, leaving with earnings of $32.000.

Scratched: Larkhill Lucille
How the race was run:
6 Queen Lyphard: Won by 1/2 of a length, in a stakes record
setting time of 1:22.42. After breaking sharply, was taken up
to run in 2nd, where at the quarter pole, she was 1/2 a length
off the leader, the 7 horse. By the 1/2 mile had moved within
a neck of the leader, where she continued to run until taking
the lead after the 3/4 mark, and pulling to a 1/2 length win.
-Ran a flawless race here, getting a great start, and sitting
just off the leader, then taking the lead and holding off the
fast closing Knights Princess for the win. As she has in her
last few starts, looks like she can go further, and expect we
will se her run at a mile or a little longer next time out. Very
impressive Sunday.
2 Knights Princess: Finished in 2nd, just 1/2 a length from the
winner. After the break, dropped back to trail the field in 6th,
where at the quarter pole, she was two lengths off the leader,
and by the 1/2 mile pole had passed the 3 and 5 horses to be
4th, still two back. Before the 3/4 mark had moved into 2nd,
and then passed the tiring early leader, the 7 horse to take
2nd, where she finished 1/2 a length behind Queen Lyphard.
-Ran a great race here Sunday in her first start for Pan Farms,
who purchased her on 1/16/12 for $828.010 from Australia Wide.
She closed beautifully and had the race been a little longer, she
very well could have won. Looks like around a mile might be her
best distance, and expect she will go longer next time out.
1 Flash Me Force: Finished in 3rd, one length from the winner.
Settled in 4th early, where at the quarter pole, she was two
lengths from the leader, and before the 1/2 mile pole, she had
passed the 5 horse to run in 3rd, still two back. Dropped back
to 4th briefly before the 3/4 mark, but was able to pass the 7
horse late to take back 3rd, where she finished a length back.
-Really ran a nice race here, and refused to give up. Unlike her
recent starts, where she has gone to the lead, or run just off the
lead, she looked more mature here, sitting off the pace early
and closing. Off to a great three-year-old campaign, and if she
can close again, may see her best races around a mile.
7 Red Jima: Finished 4th, one length behind the winner. After
breaking sharply, she was hustled up for the lead, where at
the quarter pole, she led by 1/2 of a length. Just before the 1/2
mile mark, the 6 horse had pulled up to be a neck behind her,
but Red Jima fought hard, holding the lead by a neck until just
after the 3/4 mark when she tired, and was passed by the first
three finishers to finish 4th, one length back.
-Ran a great race early, setting some pretty fast fractions, but
looked like she just wore herself out, as the distance go to be
longer than she can go at this point in her career. Her trainer
Kopites says she will cut back in distance next time out. She
could be very dangerous in shorter races, so watch this filly.
3 Go Force: Finished in 5th, two lengths behind the winner.
After the break, Go Force settled back in 5th, and was two
lengths off the leader at the quarter pole, and she continued
to run two back in 5th the entire race, which is also where
she finished.
-Just looked a bit flat here, as she was never able to gain any
position, or ground; staying two lengths back the entire race,
but the good news is she did not lose any ground either. Ran
well last time out in the Grade III Old Hat, but the competition
was softer in that race than The Forward Gal Sunday, so think
she may not quite be ready for graded stakes.
5 Summer Apple: Finished in 6th, five lengths behind the winner.
Broke well and at the quarter pole was in 3rd, two lengths off of
the lead. Just before the 1/2 mile mark, it looked like she was
getting leg weary, and was passed by the 1, 2, and 3 horses,
leaving her to trail the field in 6th, four lengths back. Then lost
another length just before the wire, finishing five lengths back.
-Only explanation I can see for her uncharacteristic race is the
extra four pounds she carried Sunday. Previously the most
weight she had carried was in her only career loss, the BC
Juvenile Fillies race, where she carried 122 pounds. Here in
The Forward Gal, the 125 pounds she carried, really seemed
to bog her down, causing her to go slow and lose ground just
after the quarter mile pole. She's proven she is a star filly, but
think weight may be problematic for her.
