RACE 9 GG San Francisco Mile (GII)
$150.000 4yo&Up 1m Turf
This time last year, War Chant was running in a $10.000 maiden claiming race - times have changed, and that is an understatement. Threshold jumped into the claim box that day and took the bay gelding, and as they say, the rest is history. Contesting the pace throughout, then pulling away late, War Chant took the San Francisco Mile (GII) by a length, getting the distance in a brisk 1:33 and one, with Pituco completing the exacta.
The field of five loaded quickly, and as they got away from the gate, Pituco was away quickly fro the rail, War Chant along side that one, and Wolfmoon Rising along side that one. Still Wheeling was a length off of that trio, and Blacks A Fake from the outside.
Around the clubhouse turn and on to the backside, they had five furlongs to run and Pituco continued to show the way, War Chant three wide and pressing that one, then a length back to Wolfmoon Rising. A gap of four lengths, Blacks A Fake skimmed the rail, and Still Wheeling was the trailer, six length from front to back.
Continuing down the backside and to the far turn, they were at the three eighths pole and Pituco and a head in front of War Chant, who continued to keep the heat on the leader. Wolfmoon Rising was loosing ground quickly, now three lengths behind the leading pair. Two more lengths back, Blacks A Fake and Still Wheeling moved in tandem.
Into the stretch and nearing the furlong marker, War Chant moved up to take the lead by a half length. Pituco dug in, trying to stay with that one, as Still Wheeling was three wide and closing in a rush. Wolfmoon Rising continued to loose ground and Blacks A Fake needed to find more if he wanted to be part of this one.
Now inside the final 150-yards and down to the wire, War Chant was not to be denied today, going under the wire in front by a length. Pituco continued on well to be second, then another length to Still Wheeling. Post time favorite Wolfmoon Rising was fourth and Blacks A Fake closed out the field.
War Chant is a 4yo bay gelding by HRP-Martian - HRP-Busher, by HRP-War Admiral, and he was bred in KY by Truitt, and as mentioned, was acquired via the claim box by his current connections, Threshold, for $10.000, in May of last season. This was his fourth win from eleven starts, and he now has $153.650 in earnings, with ths being his first stakes win.

RECAP War Chant broke alertly, stalked the pace to the furlong marker, took over, kept to task, won driving. Pituco, sent from the gate, led to the furlong marker, headed, game. Still Wheeling off a step slow, rated back to mid-way on the far turn, responded when asked, good late foot. Wolfmoon Rising contested the pace for five furlongs, faltered. Blacks A Fake was never involved, dull.
