RACE 7 GG Berkeley (GIII)
$100.000 4yo&Up 1 1/16m Main Track
Sent off as the 1/5 favorite, it was just about that easy for the Nakamura Stables trained Cerano - sitting just behind the pace, the bay cot pulled away when R Baze asked him to, and the 4yo won Monday's Berkely (GIII) at GG by two lengths, stopping the timer in 1:42 and two for the mile and a sixteenth.
The field of four loaded right in front of the crowd, here on Memorial Day, and as they got away Tempted was away quickly, Cerano next to that one, along the rail. Mardi Gras was pressing the early pace and Regatta was next to that one.
Through the clubhouse turn and on to the back stretch, they had slightly less than six furlongs to run with Tempted loose on the front by a length and a half. Cerano skimmed the pipes, giving chase, then a half length to Mardi Gras, then a long gap back to Regatta, six lengths from the leader.
Down the backside and now into the far turn, just three furlongs left to run, Tempted continued to show the way by about a length. Cerano looked unhurried behind the pace-setter, Mardi Gras next to that one, and Regatta was moving forward, now only three lengths covering the field.
Into the stretch and nearing the three-sixteenths pole, R Baze gave Cerano the bit and it took two jumps for him to be in front by a half length. Tempted battled back along the inside, Mardi Gras still had a clear path, three wide, and Regatta was asked for more, trying to get involved.
Down to the final 150-yards and the finish, Cerano was just striding away, going under the wire in front by two widening lengths. Temped was game to the wire, a length in front of Regatta, then another length back to Mardi Gras.
Cerano is a 4yo bay colt by Blue Hat - Lillylou, by HRP-Pilate, and he was bred by Ballydoyle House in KY. Acquired by Nakamura Stables at the Sep 2009 Auction for $10.080, he now shows six wins from his fourteen starts, and earnings of $317.140. This was his second consecutive graded stakes win, so it looks like the barn has this one ready for a summer of wins.

RECAP Cerano broke well, settled in behind the pace, responded when asked entering the stretch, pulled away. Tempted broke quickest of all, set the pace to the three-sixteenths pole, headed and could not stay with the winner. Regatta was taken back after the start, trailed for six furlongs, best foot to late. Mardi Gras sat behind the pace to the top of the lane, tired from there.
