EMD 1 Washington Oaks
$100.000 Three year old Fillies Mile and an Eighth Dirt
________________________________________________________________________________________
Named for the first President of the United States, and becoming the forty second state to join the union in 1889, Washington is the home of Emerald Downs and the running of the Washington Oaks.
With its inaugural race last season, Cajun Stables would win this mile and an eighth event with their sophomore filly Royal Explorer with jockey K Radke aboard in a final time of 1:52.09. The Oaks would be her fifth victory in a row, and her eighth of her career. She has gone on to win the Ladies, the Gr. II El Encino Stakes, and the Valentine Hdcp. to bring her career total to eleven victories in twenty three career starts.
Her younger two year old sister Cooks Tooth is showing promise with a win and a place in her two first starts, and may be one to watch once she starts to tackle the longer events.
This year seven will go to the post, all with hopes of going on to their first Graded Stakes title for their respective trainers with a victory here. Who will shine today and be able add this stakes title to their portfolio, and take a bite of a Golden Washington apple.
Heres the field for Saturdays race;
After losing the $100 Queen City Oaks by a nose at todays distance , she returned eighteen days later to compete in the twelve panel $150 Cougar Hdcp at DMR where she finished some 31 lengths out. Now she is returning in just ten days off that disappointing finish to compete here. Horse needs time to recover, and it baffles this writer why she would be competing here so soon. Pass.
Took minor purses in her last two events, finishing fourth in the Gr. III Miss PS whose winner has come back to take a Grade I event, and a third last time out in the Gr. III AP Oaks to one who had become a five time winner. Has seen her share of tough competitors and has gain some nice experience from both those events.Should be in the hunt here today.
. Purchased at Auction in June, came off the shelf for her new interests in an Alw28.5 event and the addition of blinkers had her a winner by some nine lengths at nine furlongs and earned a speed figure of 100. Her most recent saw her step large to the Gr. I CCA Oaks, where she finished fifth some seven shy. The return to this level and distance should play well for her. Place in exotics.
After two back to back victories in stakes company, she made the jump to the Gr. III Iowa Oaks where she flashed some early speed staying on top till the final sixteenth, then would place second by three. Will definitely be one in front through the early stages, but gets a little bit longer of a distance to tackle, and she may fade in the late stages. Could stay for a minor share.
Has been the post time favorite in her last three starts, but has yet been able to return to the winners circle since her February win in the $75 Suncoast Stakes at TAM. Finished second two starts ago against Alw71.9 company, then the muddy conditions at Finger Lakes last time out spoiled a quick payday at a minor Alw29 event. Needs to find her form, but will today be the day. Needs time I'm afraid.
Picked up in an eight dollar claimer in May coming off a win, his new owner took him to the Alw27.5 company ranks and closed to win by two going a mile and a sixteenth. Came back in an OpClm10 at that very same distance, and once again closed to win by by three after being seven lengths shy at the three quarter marker. Definitely likes to run late, and the extra distance will be to her benefit. Has the ability.
After a seven length victory back in February in an Alw42 event at FG, she has been struggling to find that winning edge until her most recent when her trainer dropped her into an OpClm12.5 to pick up a paycheck. Now with some money in the bank, steps back up to see if she can cash once again. Will be seeing some faster times then she would like here, and will be on the fringes at best.
The Duffers Picks
