3 ELP Gardenia Handicap (GIII)
$150.000 3yo&Up F&M 1m Dirt
This is a great race... and I hate 'em like this! Talk about anybody can win - well, just about anybody... I took Susans Song, even though she has the one victory. It was a GII at HOL and all of the other races have been graded, and she's a factor every time she goes out there. The works were north of the border, and she's had a gap since that :58 and change work. The extra distance may give her a place to use her tactical speed, and then bury them in the late stages.
If you want a horse that won her last race going a flat mile, all be it back in Jan, Appealing Zophie answers the problem. I love that she is in the picture every race - no worse than fifth. She's another with a sharp local work, and I will not be surprised if the win picture has T7I in it.
As much as I want to give Higher the nod for third, hoping that she gets back on track, I went with Judiths Song. I know that she hasn't won this year, but the third pick is not to win - it's to run third. Her works are sharp, and I like Pompell 'up', so, we'll see how this one plays out.. oh, and I didn't even talk about Gran'ma yet.... Here's the field -
1 Ilooklikemygrama this girl has a great problem - it's called seconditis - she has just missed in her last five races, all but one of those have been stakes races. She had a nice gallop over this track the other day and has another great chance here.
2 Higher only a single second place finish from five starts this season and considering that she made $1,150.000 last year, this is a bit of a shock. The good news is the second came last out, so the funk may be lifting, however that was an Alw group and she's going back to graded company - I just don't know.
3 Appealing Zophie don't you just love when they run good every time they step on the track... A fifth at PIM was her down-side, so you get the idea that this one can run. You may think the switch back to dirt is not good, but she has all she's needs to get it done on the brown-stuff.
4 Sonic Boom Only three starts, and came back in June to score from a 3-month vacation. She doesn't race alot - but when she comes to the dance, you better watch her. Three local prep's to go with her ability - never missed a check... sheesh - she's good!
5 Spadesthyname boy, did she make up some late ground in that last one. This is only a mile, so I'm not sure that her kick will mean alot when the check is on the line. Of course, you look at that race at CD back in Nov of 07 and you go "hmmmm..."
6 Susans Song this filly has been on a steady diet of graded stakes races, and she has seen alot of good horses. Some times, she comes out on top - some times, she is close - but every time, she gives it a heck of a ride. This is a serious contender.
7 Judiths Song no wins this year, but she's another that's been on the graded-race band-wagon. Two nice works over the surface and I like the rider for her. The post is a draw-back - so I don't see her getting the job done, but certainly a piece of the pie.
COZMAN Picks - 6 / 3 / 7 Willie's Sniper (1)
