DMR10                        DMR Derby ( Gr. II ) Recap

$250.000                                  For Three Year olds                            Mile and an eighth                    Turf

____________________________________________________________________________________

The combination of trainer Axeman and jockey R Baze are making a name for themselves here at DMR. Last years winners of this event with sophomore Turfway Express, the duo teamed up once again with Bright Navvy ( 6.70 )and found the wire on top setting a New Event Record for the mile and a eighth distance with a final time of 1:44.89. The victory would by the fourth of five in this greys career coming on the turf, and has definitely found a home over this surface. He has now won four of his eight starts this season with earnings of $291.800. His speed figures since racing for his new owner has not fallen below 95 in all three tries, just going to show the talent of this thorroughbred on the grass.

After Pumpkin Racing's Born A Banana ( 9.45 ) would break quickly from the outside and find the rail as he past the finish line for the first time, Bright Navvy would press on between runners keeping Brad Bronco's The Jamaican ( 12.25) to his outside, and post time favorite Paradise Stables Pecks Bad Boy ( 1.85 ) down at the rail. Pressing on aggressively, Bright Navvy would pull alongside the leader entering the clubhouse turn, then just keep pace with him till they hit the backstretch.

Once the field hit the backstretch after a half mile time of 47.22, R Baze would place Bright Navvy on top where he likes to do his best running. Ken Allan's Laffin Hyena ( 2.40 ) was now joining the challenge to the outside flank of the Axeman entry, and these two would be in a battle from the midpoint of the race, right down to the wire. They would be neck and neck going into the far turn, at the top of the lane and would only seperate from each other in the final sixteenth of the event, bringing everyone to their feet cheering on these two combatants. All in all, a spectacular display of determination and guts from both the horses and their riders.

While he would have to settle for the runner-up purse money, Laffin Hyena's efforts were definitely of winning caliber and his trainer should be extremely proud of his showing. While the third quarter time was a quick 23.29, the duo battled out the fourth quarter in an even faster 22.91 fraction, unheard of in some racing events. In all three of his Graded events since switching to turf, his has been right there at the wire, either winning or just missing by less then a neck. Champion caliber thats for sure.

While he made some effort to keep tight with the duelling frontrunners down the backstretch, Paradise Stables Pecks Bad Boy was only able to watch as this duo slowly pulled away from him. Still a great effort only missing by a little over two lengths and a speed figure of 96, this black colt has once again not missed cashing a top three cheque in all seven starts on the grass, and I doubt he will miss finding the winners enclosure in the near future.

Rounding out the field would be Diablo Diablo's Laffin Match ( 3.25 ) who maintained a three to four length pace behind the leader throughout for fourth, Born A Banana who tried to dominate in the early going, but had nothing for the power down the lane finishing fifth, and finally The Jamaican ,who was coming off an impressive victory over some of these in the Gr. II American Derby, but his finish just goes to prove that thoroughbreds have days when they just dont feel like competing. His trainer will have him back soon, you can guarantee it.
