Shoot The Brees made winning look easy as he strut to a two length victory in the $100.000 El Cajon Stakes at
Del Mar September 2, 2011.
Listed as the odds on favorite Shoot The Brees broke from the two hole and shot to the lead, long shot Two Under and second choice Paisano Phil chased closely then a gap to Beacon of Light and laughing Face who were at the back in the small field as only three lengths separated the back of the field to the leader.
Passing the half the runners began to increase their tempo but not much gain towards the front as Shoot The Brees still kept it rolling deep as they approached the far turn and begin to position for a run at the top of the lane. With each stride however, Beacon of Light surged forward leaving Laughing Face at the back and a tired Two Under began to fade on the rail.
The race was now set as Paisano Phil drew alongside Shoot The Brees and both horses were eye and eye at the top of the stretch. A little further back Beacon of Light still charging hoping to hit the front but the two leaders were not going to let up that easily as each found a little extra in the tank and fought relentlessly. For the next sixteenth the two leaders were mirrored as they were stride for stride and heads bobbed at the same time until Shoot The Brees went into over drive and inched away for a two length win over Paisano Phil who looked to be running on the spot and a fast finishing Beacon of Light. Laughing Face was next followed by long shot Two Under.
