As the two-year-old season continues to be a spectacle in the making the $268.750 Del Mar Futurity GI on closing day at
Del Mar on September 7 will be the highlight of southern
California racing before heading up north to Santa Anita.
A field of nine will line up for what looks to be an amazing event for these two-year-olds.
Heading the pack of colts and geldings is Guilty As Sin who was last seen winning the Hollywood Juvenile Championship GIII in a wonderful time or 1:09:41. He has been undefeated since breaking his maiden back in May and has looked sharp as exercise in preparation for this race. He will be stretching out for the first time so he is suspect to the distance as there are others in the race that has conquered at least a mile before.
Another string player in the race is Best Pal GII victor Motivator, who has been a blaze at exercise clocking a sweet 1:22 4/5 seconds going seven furlongs on the turf. Not to be fooled as it is the same work pattern that saw him win his first Graded Stakes race so if it's not broke don't fix it. If the dirt races don't fair him well he will definitely have a racing career on the grass.
Saratoga Special GII winner Condottieri has caught the eyes of many since going from a maiden winner to a Graded Stakes winner in not time and he continues to impress as he has been busy in the mornings with bullet works breezes. He ran a very fast time while winning the Saratoga Special GII and will look to mimic that performance in the Futurity.
Copper Bottom closed well enough but had to settle for fourth place in the Best Pal GII but only by a length so with the added real estate he could do some damage. He has been working well in his preparation so a winning run is in the cards.
Vagabond tried four times before breaking his maiden and then leaped into Graded company but that was not a good reflection as he was seventh in the Saratoga Special GII. He has been showing improvement but still needs a little more time before taking on these monsters.
Byaneck finished third behind Guilty As Sin in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship GIII, since then he has not shown much at exercise but he sure knows how to run without a doubt but against these he may find one or more a bit tough to handle.
Lady Voyage the winner of the Graduation Stakes is seeking his first Graded win. In the mornings at exercise he has been improving but he will have to work twice as hard to go up against the principles in the race.
Quench and Battle Cry are the only runners making their stakes debut. Quench has been a on the radar since breaking his maiden at Woodbine in a stellar time of 1:22 4/5 going seven furlongs and he has followed that up with works only a stakes quality horse can produce, Battle Cry broke his maiden in 1:37 1/5 as he has be showing constant improvement since making his debut back in July. Steady works also keeps this bay colt calm and cool until he is let loose by his trainer.
