Guilty As Sin stamped his class on a somewhat accomplished field as he captured the $268.750 Del Mar Futurity GI on closing day at
Del Mar for Two-year-olds September 7, 2011 on the polytrack. The win also ensured Guilty As Sin a spot in the line up in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile GI at Churchill Downs in November as part of the Breeder's Cup Challenge "Win and you're in" campaign.
With the win in the
Del Mar Futurity Guilty As Sin is probably now one of the leading Two-year-olds in
California at the moment and I am sue his connections wouldn't mind him winning the Juvenile GI. The field was a healthy on with nine entries all vying for the lucrative Grade One status.
The field broke quickly as Battle Cry jumped to an early lead a pack of seven horses followed closely behind with Vagabond left four lengths at the back. Quench and Lady Voyager raced up sharply and challenged the leader but that was short lived as Condottieri rushed to the rail and sped past his rivals on the front end. Guilty As Sin tracked closely and was never left out of it.
In a quick dash Guilty As Sin ran pass Condottieri and established a one and a half length lead, Motivator was about seven wide in third before Copper Bottom rail running and Byaneck emerged out of the pack. Byaneck was the only one to try and challenge Guilty As Sin for the lead. As the field turned for home Guilty As Sin still maintained his lead but a new rival in Copper Button appeared as he was closing on the rail but had no room to put in a better run.
Condottieri rallied mid pack and found a little extra in the tank and assumed the second spot but Guilty As Sin was much the best like the energizer bunny he kept going and going. The clock stopped in a tame 1:21:81 for the seven furlong trek and marked the second Graded Stakes win for the Two-year-old bay colt bred, trained and owned by Riggins Stables. Condottieri was second by a length and a half as Copper Bottom poked his head on the line to out bob Byaneck for third, Motivator tried but found the field a bit tough held on to fifth followed by Vagabond, Battle Cry, Lady Voyager and Quench at the back rounding out the field.
