La Prevoyante Handicap Grade III
For Fillies and Mares Three Year Olds And Upward
Going a Mile and a Half on the Turf Course
For a purse of $107.500
at Calder Race Course
on Friday December 2, 2011
This is the seventh year that the La Prevoyante Handicap Grade III has been run at HRP. In the past six years there has been no trainer that has won this race more than once. Back in 2010 trainer Barcelona Farms saddled the winner Valibert who holds the race record with a time of 2:26.60. The track record was set by Charming Behrens with a time of 2:23.98 saddled by Bush Wackers Of Ohio on December 26, 2009. The track has been firm there and it looks like there is no chance of rain before this big race. Lets look at the 2011 entries
1 California Bear
Owned and Bred by Maverick Racing
Sire Foxhunt
Dam Allaire
Life Record 25-6-6-6
California Bear is coming into this race from a fourth place finish at Fort Erie back in October over the mile and a sixteenth on the dirt. In this race she faced Allowance company of $19.200. Prior to that she was on the sod at Woodbine in September against Optional Claimers $80.000 Non Winners of 4 races. This race was a sprint of six and a half furlongs earning her a third place finish. Back in August she was up at Saratoga Race Course against Claimers $60.000 at a mile and a sixteenth on the sod where she placed fourth. California Bear is trying to get off the devil’s number for her record of 6-6-6. You have to go back to October 2010 to find a win for her, and the win did come from a Grade I at a mile and an eighth on the sod. She has never been further than 9 furlongs, and today she will have to add three more furlongs to get the distance. This could be a factor. I am opting out.
2 Well Maid
Owned by Hunterman Stable
Bred by Ken Allan
Sire HRP-In The Wings
Dam HRP-Chicleight
Life Record 13-4-4-2
Well Maid was purchased for in the June auction for $58.000. Just beat by a nose in the Cardinal Handicap Grade III which was at a mile and an eighth on the sod. In September she was at Philadelphia Park against Optional Claimers $40.000 Non Winners of 4 races where she scored a win over the mile and seventy yards on the sod. In September she was here where she placed second against Optional Claimers $25.000 Non Winners of 3 races over a mile and a sixteenth on the soft sod. She has never been over the distance of nine furlongs, and she has never won over the distance of eight and a half furlongs. Today she will have to add three furlongs to her long run distance to date, and I think this could make her struggle.
3 Catalexic
Owned by Simmer Down Stable
Bred by Barcelona Farms
Sire Colins Cat
Dam Lex3
Life Record 28-15-8-0
In November Catalexic on Well Maid and four others in the Cardinal Handicap Grade III at Churchill Downs. This was a mile and an eighth over the sod where Catalexic would score a win over Well Maid by a nose. Back in October Catalecix won at a mile over the sod in the Swingtime Stakes at Santa Anita. Currently she has won four in a row, and she looks to score her fifth consecutive win. A win today could secure that for owner Simmer Down Stable.
4 Helenoa
Owned and Bred by Ekli Stable
Sire Noa
Dam Helen
Life Record 20-5-4-4
In Helenoa last four races she has scored four third places. She is looking to change that today, with a better placement in this race. She was here just less than three weeks ago in the Heubeck Distaff Handicap. This race was over the dirt course. The next three races were over the sod. She has won at a mile and an eighth on the sod in the Honeymoon Handicap Grade II back in June. She is another that has never been over 9 furlongs. It will be interesting to see how she handles it.
5 Sicilian Olympia SCRATCH
6 Valibert
Owned by Barcelona Farms
Bred by Foremost
Sire HRP-Bertrando
Dam HRP-Valseuse
Life Record 27-18-1-3
Valibert was able to beat five others in the Dowager at Keeneland in October at a mile and a half on the sod. Prior to that for the summer she was up at Saratoga Race Course. She was in the Glens Falls Handicap Grade III at a mile and three eighths where she scored a third place finish. Then in the Grade I Diana at a mile and eighth on the sod, she scored a fourth place finish. By her record you can tell she does not lose to many, and looks tough here. She does have to carry the highest weight at 123 pounds.
7 Bag Lunch
Owned and Bred by Jkk Racing Stables
Sire The Big Bag
Dam Indettori
Life Record 15-2-2-3
Bag Lunch has been racing at a mile and an eighth on the sod in her last four starts. You have to look back to July for Bag Lunch to get one in the bag for owner Jkk Racing Stables. She has only been over the sod five times, and she has earned herself a win and a place. She will have to show the same effort that she did over the summer to be competitive.
8 Ellie
Owned and Bred by Boomtown
Sire Royal Arch
Dam Boom Slide
Life Record 25-6-6-6
Ellie last win comes from September at Fort Erie at a mile and a sixteenth over the firm sod in the Labatt Cup for $30.000. She has never raced over that distance, and for me I have to say, will be her biggest struggle against this crop. In addition she has not really faced any tough competition like she will be dealt today. This will be a good gauge for her to showcase her talents. I do not expect her to hit the board, but hey if you like the longshots, then I expect you will have found yourself one.
9 Cheval En Argent
Owned and Bred by First Flight Stable
Sire Carobiades
Dam Calcutta Contention
Life Record 8-1-1-3
Cheval En Argent enters this race with the shortest resume in the race. She comes off a third place finish in the recent Dowager. Prior to that she finished second in a field of ten at River Downs in an $8.000 Allowance at a mile and a half on the sod. I have to think that if she can not beat that class, how will she compete today. I do like that she has been over the distance, but it is pretty disappointing that she failed against $8.000 Allowance company.
10 Reason To Earn
Owned by Dynark Stables
Bred by Mshot Stables
Sire HRP-Hail To Reason
Dam HRP-Roused
Life Record 26-6-4-3
Reason To Earn has only been over the sod seven times in her career, with two wins and two places. Most recently she has been running over the dirt. You have to go back to August to find a turf start. She raced in the Beverly D where she placed fifth. If you look at March she raced in the Grade III Orchid at todays distance where she scored a fourth place finish. Her last turf win comes from the Grade III Very One win in February 2011.
Iwin Picks: 6-2-3
The Tout Picks: 3-2-6
Until next time this is Iwin signing off!
