RACE 4 CNL   VA Derby (GII)
     $600.000                3yo     1 1/4m     Turf          Weight 122 lbs.

The wins just keep coming for Rainbow Sox.  The Harrowden trained 3yo closed well on the soggy CNL turf course, taking Saturday's VA Derby (GII) by a quarter length, getting the mile and a quarter in 2:03 and three.  That was the sixth consecutive win for this one - quite an accomplishment.  Oregon Duck nosed out Steel Ball for second, to make a $50.50 trifecta.

The seven sophomores made their way to the gate, and away with Khe San Troop out quickly from the inside, Ludwig Van Beethoven from the outside, then Steel Ball on the rail.  Delta Motto was right in the middle of things, Alezzandrrio a length back, then Rainbow Sox and Oregon Duck.

By the stands the first time, and into the clubhouse turn with seven furlongs to run, Ludwig Van Beethoven was in front by a length and a half.  Khe San Troop and Steel Ball along the rail, Delta Motto three wide, then a long gap of five back to Rainbow Sox caught three wide, Alezzandro, and Oregon Duck between horses.

Around the clubhouse turn and now making their way down the backside with a half mile to run, Ludwig Van Beethoven was in front by two lengths.  Steel Ball skimmed the rail in second, Khe San Troop loosing ground next to that one and Delta Motto still three wide.  Three more lengths back to Rainbow Sox, Oregon Duck two lengths off of that one and Alezzandro was now the trailer, nine lengths from front to back.

Swing around the turn to the top of the lane, the field went past the three-sixteenths pole and Steel Ball found a seam on the rail and moved up to stick a neck in front.  Ludwig Van Beethoven looked to be headed in the wrong direction, as Khe San Troop swung three wide for the drive.  Rainbow Sox was asked for more, Delta Motto next to that one.  Oregon Duck was a length behind that pair, swinging widest of all for the drive, and Alezzandro was far back and out of contention.

In deep stretch, it was a cavalry charge to the finish n this one, and out of the pack, Rainbow Sox emerged, going on to win by a quarter length.  Oregon Duck showed a great late effort, and just missed.  Steel Ball was a head back in third, with Khe San Troop getting the minor share.  Ludwig Van Beethoven tired to be fifth, Alezzandro in sixth and Delta Motto closed out the field.

Rainbow Sox is a bay 3yo gelding by Outrageous Sox - Emerging Colors, by Tricky Ticky, and he was bred by his owner, Harrowden, in KY.  This was his eighth win from ten starts, and he's never been beaten on a wet surface.  He's nearing the millionaire mark, showing $942.970 in earnings, and I would expect him to move past that milestone soon.

RECAP   Rainbow Sox broke in hand, allowed to settle mid-pack while unhurried, responded when asked, kicked clear late. Oregon Duck rated back after the break, showing no speed for seven furlongs, swung widest for the drive, good late effort, just missed. Steel Ball saved ground while up close, out-finished. Khe San Troop pressed the pace, evenly late. Ludwig Van Beethoven showed good speed while setting the pace to the furlong marker, headed, folded. Alezzandro gave a dull effort. Delta Motto up close to the top of the lane, stopped abruptly.
