Whats Up came into the $500.000 CNL Turf Cup Saturday
at Colonial Downs riding a 5 race win streak, with 4 of
those being graded stakes wins.
He had not raced over the turf in over two years, since he
was a 3 yr old, so the field was hopeful this might be their
best shot at bringing the winning streak of this recently
unstoppable horse to an end. Maybe he was finally in a
vulnerable spot? Sorry guys, no such luck, as Whats Up
took to the turf like a fish to water, and went wire to wire to
get his 6th straight win.
In his five wins prior to the CNL Turf Cup, Whats Up had won
each race by two or more lengths. In the race Saturday he
won by just 3/4 of a length, his shortest winning margin in his
now 6 race win streak, and he earned a speed figure of 103,
slightly lower than his recent dirt stakes wins, which have
been between 104 and 106. So maybe he did not like the
turf quite as well as the dirt, but he won, proving he can win
on the grass, and passing yet another test put before him.
I think we can now safely say he is a Super Horse, and it
looks like Whats Up's breeding stock has gone up. Again!
Whats Up trained by Australia Wide ran the 1 3/16 over
the turf in a final time of 1:51.90, and earned $300.000 for
the win, bringing his total earnings to a cool $6,114.56
and his race record to an amazing 19-13-4-1.
Ten Years After finished 2nd for trainer, YME Stable and
earned $100.000, while Dig A Grave In Texas was 3rd for
trainer Maverick Racing, and earned $80.000.

How the race was run:
1 Whats Up- Won by 3/4 of a length. He was taken out
to lead right after the break, and led the race by close
to two lengths all the way until the 3/4 pole. At the mile
mark, he was out in front by one length, as the 5 horse
was gaining ground on him at the end, but Whats Up
was able to hang on for the win.
-While this race was his smallest margin of victory in
his last six races, he wired the field and he could not
be caught. Although his win margin and speed figure
were slightly smaller than in his races over the dirt,
Whats Up proved that he can win on turf, and ran a
fantastic race.
5 Ten Years After- Finished 2nd, just 3/4 of a length
behind the winner. Was taken back to the rail, to sit
about 2 lengths off the lead. Began to steadily close
the gap between himself and Whats Up, and after the
3/4 pole was charging hard, but just could not catch
the winner in time.
-Ran a wonderful race, and was by far second best in
the field. Ten Years After came the closest to catching
Whats Up in all of his past six races, and he was closing
so fast at the end, had the race been just a little longer,
it looked like he would have had a legitimate chance to
catch the winner. YME Stable should be extremely proud
of how Ten Years After ran in the CNL Turf Cup.
3 Dig A Grave In Texas- Was 3rd, eight lengths back
from the winner. Was sent out early to run off the lead
by about a length and a half. Around the 1/2 mile pole,
he had fallen to 2 1/2 lengths behind the leader, and
was passed by the 5 horse, as he tired and faded and
was just able to get in front of his stablemate, the 4
horse before the wire to get third, eight lengths back.
-Ran a good race, but Dig A Grave In Texas was simply
outrun in this race by the first two finishers. Expect we
will see him run a big race next time out, coming out of
this race.
4 USC Trojan- Was 4th, nine lengths behind the winner.
Was sent out fast after the break and led for a very
brief time before being passed by the 1 horse. Fell
back to run with the 3 horse, his stablemate about
three lengths from the leader. At the 3/4 pole tried
to make a run, but came up empty and fell to about
seven lengths back where he and his stablemate
battled back and forth for third, until the 3 horse
was finally able to pass him, and he faded further
to finish 9 lengths back at the wire.
-After having run almost exclusively in sprint races in
his career, looked like the distance was much longer
than he USC Trojan liked. It also appeared he is not
quite ready to take on the type of stakes company
he met in this race at this point in his career. Would
expect he will drop back in distance and class for his
next start.
2 Bailjumper- Finished in 5th place, nine lengths behind
the winner. Trailed the field early in the race by about
five lengths, and continued to trail the rest of the race.
Tried to make a mild bid around the 3/4 pole, but he
simply came up empty, and began to tire badly to
fade to nine lengths behind when the leader hit the
wire.
-Bailjumper was just in over his head against the type
of horses he faced in this race. His two recent wins
both came in low level claiming races, and it simply
looks like he is not ready to face stakes competition
at this point in his career. Look for him to drop back
in class, likely in an allowance race next time out.
