Maahes is like the Energizer Bunny; she just keeps going and going,
and in the Grade II Mrs Revere Saturday, she was gone. Maahes took
the lead around the 1/2 mile pole of the $201.250, turf race at Churchill
Downs, and never looked back, winning easily by three lengths.
Not only did Maahes, trained by Fatboy Slayer smash the stakes record
for the Mrs Revere, but she also set a new track record for 1 1/16 over the
turf at Churchill Downs; finishing the race over firm turf in 2:39.01. Her three
length, record setting win here was more amazing when you consider the
circumstances leading to this race.
Rewind to last weekend: three-year-old Maahes ran in her third graded stakes
race in just 35 days; that race was the Grade I BC Fillies & Mares Turf. She
finished an impressive 4th there after a gutsy run, and while most horses who
ran in a BC race are tired, and recovering at the farm, not Maahes. Eight days
after the BC, she was making her now fourth stakes start in 43 days, here in
the Grade II Mrs Revere.
Ask almost anyone, and they would have told you there was little chance that
Maahes was in good enough shape after her big race last week, and such a
rigorous recent schedule, that she could win here, much less to win by three
lengths and set a track record. But someone forgot to tell that to Maahes, who
was full of energy, as she ran the race of a lifetime Saturday, pulling off what
most horses would not have been capable of, even if fresh off a three to four
week break. It appears that this daughter of Nineveh is somewhat of a freak,
and the very good kind. Will she run again in the next couple weeks? Probably
not, as she has earned herself some well deserved R & R, but should she race
soon, all I can say is, I will not bet against her.
Maahes, a three-year-old daughter of Ninevah, is trained by Fatboy Slayer,
and for her win in the Grade II Mrs Revere, earned $120.750. She now has
lifetime earnings of $809.290, and a race record of 22-8-6-3.
Mrs John Q Adams, trained by Maverick Racing finished 2nd, earning
$40.250, while Top Class was 3rd, taking home $32.200 for her trainer,
Ken Allan.

How the race was run:
7 Maahes: Won by three lengths. Ran in 4th early, two lengths
off the lead. After the 1/4 pole, she made a move up to take
2nd, just 1/4 of a length behind the leader, and at the 1/2
mile, she took the lead, and right after was two lengths in
front. At the mile pole, she increased her lead to three, and
was flying when she hit the wire for the win.
-What more can you say? Three length winner on just eight
days rest, and she sets a new track record. Maahes looks
like the real deal, and has stamped herself a superstar.
1 Mrs John Q Adams: Finished 2nd, three lengths from the
winner. After the break, dropped back to 7th, five lengths
off the lead. At the 1/2 mile mark had moved into 6th, four
lengths back, and was steadily gaining ground. At the 3/4
mark, had passed horses to get up for 3rd, two lengths from
the lead, and then at the mile pole, was in 2nd closing well,
but just couldn't catch Maahes.
-Ran well here, and finished two lengths in front of the 3rd
place finisher. Gained ground throughout the race, and was
able to finish strong in 2nd, in a sharp time of 1:39.74. Will
likely find her way back to the winners circle very soon.
8 Top Class: Finished 3rd, five lengths from the winner. Ran
4th early, two lengths off the leader. Moved up to 3rd at the
1/2 mile pole, still two lengths back. Nearing the 3/4 mark,
passed the 9 horse to run in 2nd, but shortly after she was
passed by the 1 horse, and began to tire and fade back to
finish five lengths back in 3rd.
-Ran well early, it looked like the distance here was just a
little longer than she wanted to go with her running style.
Running near the pace early looked like it took a toll, and
caused her to tire near the mile pole. Hasn't raced much
this year, so could do really well next time out.
6 Crafty Friend: Finished in 4th place, six lengths behind
the winner. After the break settled in 6th, four lengths off
the leader. Dropped back to 7th place briefly, but was able
to reclaim 6th as she passed the 10 horse at the 3/4 mile
mark, and then moved up to take 4th, finishing six lengths
back.
-Ran well here to finish in 4th, but just looked like graded
stakes level is a bit tough for her at this point. Distance
looked a little long, since she was beginning to tire at the
end of the race, but she fought well in the early going, and
never gave up.
4 Warbling: Finished in 5th, six lengths behind the winner.
Dropped back after the break to run in 8th, six lengths off
of the lead, where she ran until the 3/4 mile pole, when she
was passed and ran in 9th. Began to move up just before
the wire and was able to take 5th, still six lengths back.
-Ran six lengths from the lead the entire race. In her last
race, the QE II Cup Challenge, she ran three lengths back
and never gained any ground there either. Just seems to be
coming up a bit flat in her last two starts and has just never
really fired to make a move. Will have to see where she runs
next.
3 Diva The Weenie: Finished 6th, six lengths back from the
winner. After the break, settled nicely in 5th, three lengths
from the lead, and at the 1/2 mile pole, she was still in 5th,
but had moved up to be two lengths off the leader. At the
3/4 mark, she had moved into 4th place, but began to slow
near the mile pole to drop to three lengths back, and then
she tired and lost ground to finish 6th, six lengths back.
-Diva The Weenie ran really well early in this race, but think
the pace which was faster than what she has been running
took a toll, causing her to tire. Distance may have been a
bit long for her running style in graded stakes company, so
we may see her cut back in distance or drop down in class
slightly next time out.
9 Wild Temptation: Finished in 7th, six lengths behind the
winner. Broke very sharply and was sent out to the front to
lead briefly by 3/4 of a length. At the 1/2 mile was passed
by the 7 horse, to run 2nd. Shortly after that, she tired, and
began to fade back and lose ground to finish 7th.
-With all of Wild Temptation's wins coming in sprint races,
it looked like distance was a bit long for her front running
style and early speed. She has also struggled in all of her
graded stakes attempts, so we will probably see her cut
back in distance and drop in class some for next time out.
10 Simply Excellent: Finished 8th, eight lengths behind the
winner. Just after the break, ran 2nd 3/4 of a length from
the lead. By the 1/2 mile pole, she was already tiring and
losing ground, to be 4th, two lengths off the leader. She
continued to fade and at the 3/4 pole was running in 7th,
four lengths back, and then continued to fall back to finish
eight lengths behind in 8th.
-Like Simply Excellent did in her last start, she went out
early, and then tired and finished early. Although she won
the Grade III VA Oaks last July, since then she has been
struggling to be competitive at the graded stakes level. Has
now only finished in the money in 7 of 14 races, so likely we
will see her drop down to run in some allowance races until
she is more ready for stakes level competition.
5 Desert Angel: Finished in 9th, nine lengths back. Just after
the break, dropped back to trail the field, running in 10th, eight
lengths from the lead. By the 1/2 mile pole was still trailing,
nine lengths back, then at the 3/4 mark made a move and was
able to gain two lengths to be seven lengths from the leader.
Passed the 2 horse before the wire to take 9th place, where
she finished nine lengths back.
-Looked like the graded stakes level is just a bit too tough for
Desert Angel at this point in her career. She is lightly raced
and this was just her 9th career start, and with works as fast
as hers, she should be ready to try stakes again in the not too
distant future.
2 Good Looking Again: Finished 10th, ten lengths behind the
winner. Ran in 9th early, seven lengths off of the leader, where
she continued to run all the way until the 3/4 mile marker, when
she made a move and was able to take 8th, six lengths back.
Shortly after she tired, and faded back to finish 10th, ten lengths
back at the wire.
-Just don't think Good Looking Again is ready to run in stakes
races yet. Other than her maiden win, she has two wins, one
coming in a low level $6.200 Allowance race, and the other in
a $25.000 Claiming race. The 1 1/16 was too long for her in her
last race, a $35.000 Claiming race, and looked long here too, as
she was tiring and losing ground near the end. Think we will see
her cut back in distance and drop in class a bit for her next race.
