As CD closed its doors it felt like another year had come to an end on another great season of racing. The last day of the meet was a quiet one and had no bearing on the trainers title but there was still a couple of nice horses to see and good purses to be had.
Race 1 12:40
1 1/8 Mile Dirt Claiming Purse $20.000 Filly & Mare 3 Year Olds And Up.
Gale Front from Barcelona Farms took the opener against two rivals. In a clear lead from the off the four year old always looked comfortable in the lead and won by a very easy two lengths never really looking like getting beat but a couple of rivals who ran pretty lack lustre races. Courtesan chased the leader from the off but just stayed in pursuit and never threatened with the odds on favourite Ginger Crush doing much the same in third just whacking away and making no impression.
Race 2 13:00
5 Furlongs Turf Starter Allowance Purse $20.000 Filly & Mare 3 Year Olds And Up.
Boomtown Stable struck a one two in this race with Milf reef taking the win by a cosy length. Now a winner of two from two on softened ground she looks like she adores the rain and a turf sprint and if she can find these conditions again there is no reason she could not squeeze another win into the season. Stable companion Poison Mistress was in a close stalk from the off but was out finished by her stable neighbour and had to settle for second a half in front of Tupayachi who was on four from six this year before today but found this raise in grade a bit tough.
Race 3 13:20
1 1/16 Mile Turf Allowance Purse $51.600 Filly 2 Year Olds.
Faberge from Yahudi Stable has proved she has no problem with softer ground and a long trip in the past and won this very well to bring her seasons tally to three from six. In the midfield early on she cruised up and ran away by a fairly impressive two lengths. She is clearly a nice and improving filly but it remains to be seen if she can reproduce this type of form on a faster surface. Kings Gold broke fast from a wide gate but never found the rail and after holding a narrow lead for some of the race just whacked away for a game but well beaten second. Halo And Horns came from a long way back for third and struggled in the ground.
Race 4 13:40
1 1/16 Mile Turf Allowance Purse $50.000 Open 3 Year Olds And Up.
The last race of the day and the last race of the meet went to Ashwood Farms and Goyathlay. The four year old son of Bazooka was well back for much of the race but produced an amazing finish to storm through the field and score in the end by an easy two lengths. This one looks a late developer and now has three wins in a row and may well find a good five year old season next year. King Of The Blues stalked the lead and ran a little wide and although he managed to beat off the rest he had no answer to the swooping run of the winner and had to settle for second. Millenium Tiger did not seem to stay the trip and faded into third.
The meet title looked decided a long time ago and it did not change much as Dynark Stables took the prize with thirteen wins, five clear of Barcelona Farms. Riggins Racing took third. There should be an honourable mention for Fatboy Slayer who managed three wins from just four races. Of the jockeys R J Albarado took the most wins with fifteen with J R leparoux in second and K J Desormeaux in third.
