7/25 CBY CC Emerald 3YO & Up 1 1/16 Mile Turf Purse: $130.000
____________________________________________________________
A full field of twelve turned out for the fifth running of the CC Emerald at CBY on Saturday. The crowd was prepared for a full card of exciting racing and the CC Emerald filled the bill.
Veterans Veto and Span Bala Band, both with over thirty career races, immediately moved to the front and looked to make the race their own. Veto got the early jump and took the lead while grabbing the rail. Span Bala Band was just behind him on the outside. The two carried their positions throughout the clubhouse turn and on into the back stretch.
Span Bala Span began to gain on Veto as they turned for home. To his outside however, came the fast closing Cat Attack who although taken wide in both turns, seemed none the worse for it. Veto faltered when they the hit the stretch and Span Bala Band moved to take the lead. Jockey R Eikleberry glanced over his right shoulder and saw a chestnut blur. Cat Attack was now flying down the stretch, dueling Span Bala Band every step from just off his flank. Span Bala Band dug in with his heels and kept up momentum, refusing to give up any more ground. They hit the wire that way, Span Bala Band in the lead and Cat Attack three fourths of a length back. Veto hung on for the show money.
Span Bala Band increased his record to 33-11-8-2 with $259,990 in career earnings. The tall bay son of Onemanwreckingcrew shows no sign of slowing down. Congratulations to Thinken Stables for keeping the old boy sharp. He should have another fine season. Here is the race recap:
Span Bala Band stalked throughout, took the lead in the stretch and held on for the win. Cat Attack was back early, wide through both turns, closed late to duel with the winner and finish runner up. Veto broke alertly, took the lead and held it throughout until fading in the stretch. Bay of Ships ran in mid pack with a late rally for fourth. Man of Vanity never fired. Flashy Owasso broke alertly, was in contention early, but faded in drive. Rko was back early and never factored. Hombre was back early with little to show. Astro Nurd played no part. Knight Gangster broke on the far outside, dropped back to save ground, tired and drifted out in the stretch. Cactus Leaguer was never a threat. Virtuoso broke alertly to run just off the pace, was taken wide both turns and tired in the stretch.
