RACE 6 CBY CC Jewel
$150.000 3yo&Up 1 1/8m Main Track 3yo 117 lbs. Older 122 lbs.
Well, I had one thing right in the preview... when talking about Larkhill Stables' Crystal Springs, when I said "..he does have some ability...". That ability sure was on display in the 2010 CC Jewel. Knocking the rust off, after a 2-month absence in his last race, he made this one all his, taking them through every call and winning by a length while getting the mile and an eighth in 1:50.18, with jockey S Stevens in the irons. Glanth Perce Neighe was second and No Trippin made for a $393.10 trifecta.
The field of seven loaded for the feature race, here on CC Day, and as they got away from the gate in front of the crowd here at CBY, Crystal Springs was out quickly to lead by a length, Sensual Standard from the outside, No Trippin on the rail. Another length back to Annie Girl from the middle of the track, Island Treasure and Galanth Perce Neige on either side of that one, and Save The Wales was the early trailer.
Around the clubhouse turn and now six and a half furlongs to run, and Crystal Springs continued to show the way by a half-length. Sensual Standard kept the pressure on from the outside, No Trippin from the rail, then a length and a half back to Annie Girl, just in behind that trio. A gap of three back to Galanth Perce Neigge, Save The Wales on the rail and Island Treasure was the trailer, eight lengths off of the pace.
Down the backside and nearing the far turn, the field made their way past he five-sixteenths pole and Crystal Springs was trying to gate to wire with this one, in front by a length. Sensual Standard wasn't budging, No Trippin continued to skim the paint off of the rail, then three back to Galanth Perce Neige. Annie Girl was backing out of it, Save the Whales and race favorite Island Treasure seemed in distress, sixteen lengths back.
Swing around the far turn to the top of the lane, just three-sixteenths left to run and Crystal Springs was now getting covered up by Sensual Standard. A length back, No Trippin dug in along the inside as Galanth Perce Neige was now moving up four wide. Annie Girl was trying to find a second wind, Save The Whales needed to find move and Island Treasure was out of this one.
Now inside the furlong marker, Crystal Springs was given a love tap by jockey S Stevens and he responded, moving back in front by a length. Sensual Standard was now shortening stride, but Galanth Perce Neige moved up closer from the middle of the track. No Trippin was still using that inside position to his advantage, Annie Girl tried to find a late kick, then Save The Wales and Island Treasure.
Inside the final 150-yards and down to the finish, Crystal Springs was not to be denied and took the win by a length. Galnth Perce Neige kept that late move going to take the second position, a length in front of No Trippin. Annie Girl was a half length back in fourth, just getting the minor money over a tiring Sensual Standard. Save The Wales was sixth and Island Treasure never got a thing going and finish far back in seventh.
Crystal Springs is a 3yo gray gelding by HRP-Wekiva Springs - HRP-Crystal Palace, by HRP-Solar Slipper, and he was bred by Hunterman Stable in KY. Acquired by Larkhill Stables at the June '10 Auction, this was his first win in his second start for the new connections. He has four wins from his twelve lifetime starts, with this being his first stakes victory.

RECAP Crystal Springs broke quickest of all to secure an early advantage, controlled the pace under wraps, challenged at the furlong marker, held steady, won driving. Galanth Perce Neige broke in hand, steadily work his way through the field, swung four wide for the drive, good effort. No Trippin saved ground throughout, even try. no excuse. Annie Girl gave an even effort. Sensual Standard press the pace while three wide throughout, drew even to the leader with a furlong to run, tired from there. Save The Wales was never involved, outrun. Island Treasure gave a dull effort, eased to the finish.
