The only question for me, coming into Saturday's CC Jewel, the feature race of CC Day, here at CBY, was if Copious Notes could go the distance - that answer would be yes. Tracking the leaders early, moving forward through the turn and surviving a stretch-long battle, the gelding was just able to hold off Bad Guy Running and took the win by a nose, getting the mile and an eighth in 1:50.01.
The field of elven heard the bugle call, loaded up and were away with a lineup across the track going for the lead. Bad Guy Running was looking at Doubtful Sound and Shoot A Straw from the outside, Cruzzlewit back towards the inside, then Wonder Bug and Senor Sacerdote a neck off of that one. Keystone Spark was another length back, with Copious Notes next to that one. Unnn Stoppable was next, then Last Persian and Dandys Walker was off slowest of all.
By the stands the first time and now leaving the clubhouse turn for the run down the backstretch, there were six furlongs to run and Shoot A Straw had moved up quickly to take command by two lengths. Doubtful Sound moved up and over, with Bad Guy Running skimming the rail next to that one. Senor Sacerdote was a bit wide through the turn, with Copious Notes next to him and Cruzzlewit along the rail. Another length back, Dandys Walker saved ground under a snug hold, then three quarters back to Keystone Spark, Wonder Bug to his outside, then two more back to the trailing pair, Unnn Stoppable and Last Persian.
They made the run down the backside and were now headed into the far turn with three furlongs to run, and this one was tightening up to a point that any horse had a shot. Shoot A Straw still led by a length, but a foursome that included Doubtful Sound, Bad Guy Running, Copious Notes and Senor Sacerdote were making a run at the leader. Another quartet took up the chase, two lengths back, with Chuzzlewin along the rail, Dandys Walker next to that one, Wonder Bug from the far outside and Keystone Spark between horses. Another length back, Last Persian was beginning to pickup the pace and Unn Stoppable was now the trailer.
Around the turn and to the top of the lane, there was slightly more than a furlong to run and Shoot A Straw said "thanks guys, you can take it from here" as he put on the air brakes. Copious Notes now struck front from the outside, with Bad Guy Running and Doubtful Sound running right along side. The scramble was on for the minor money, but this was going to be a two horse battle to the finish.
Now inside the final 150-yards and to the wire, Copious Notes and Bad Guy Running were noses apart, all out and running for their chance at glory, and as they went under the wire, it was to close to call - the PHOTO sign went up and after a review of the photograph, Copious Notes was just a nose-hair in front, taking the win for Avalos Racing. Bad Guy Running just missed, with Doubtful Sound tiring a bit in the late going but holding third over Last Persian, who made a good late run to get the minor money. Senor Sacerdote was fifth, Dandys Walker, Wonder Bug, Soot A Straw tiring to eighth, Chuzzlewit, Keystone Spark tenth and Unn Stoppable closing out the field.
Copious Notes is a 4yo gelded son of Chochise - Hone Wrap, By Fraggle Rock, and he was bred in TX by Acber Farms. He was acquired by Avalos Racing via the claiming box, for $25.000. He now shows eight wins from his sixteen starts, and takes his earnings to $368.910. This was his second stakes win from his last three starts, with a game second between those wins - obviously, he is in fine form and should be a factor in the fall handicap races.

RECAP Copious Notes broke in hand, followed the pace to the top of the lane, moved up to take the lead, stretch-long battle, just up. Bad Guy Running chased the pace throughout, dueled through the lane, just missed. Doubtful Sound away quickly, forced the pace to deep stretch, weary late. Last Persian off a step slow, trailed to the top of the lane, good late foot. Senor Sacerdote up close throughout even effort. Dandys Walker saved ground to no avail. Wonder Bug was not a factor. Shoot A Staw sent from the gate, led to the stretch, faded. Chuzzlwit mid pack for six furlongs, tired. Keystone Spark was outrun. Unnn Stoppable was never involved, trailed.
