It says a lot about the calibre of older male sprinters that a horse like DOUBLE DIGIT with 20 wins in 46 starts and $2,042.780 in career earnings, a horse that had won a Grade 3 just three starts back, was not the morning line favorite. Instead, he went off at 5-2 and turned in a tremendous performance.
Big Hat No Cattle (Angelos Stables) was first out of the gate, while DOUBLE DIGIT came away fourth in a field of five. He was in no hurry in the early jumps and gave the field a short head start before switching to the outside and starting to roll around the turn for home. The only gray in the field, he was easy to spot as he slowly, methodically made his way past his competitors and took the lead with 1 1/2 furlongs to go. In the final furlong, he pulled away by two lengths and finished the six furlong sprint in 1:09.62 for a 101 SRF.
It was the twenty-first career win for Australia Wides seven-year-old warhorse and boosted his career earnings to $2,102.780. He paid $7.90, $4.80, and $3.30.
Show Business (Alydar Stables), the longest shot on the board at 50-1, came from another time zone to get up for second. He lost contact with the field for most of the race, then closed strongly. He paid a whopping $135.40 and $75.50.
