It is one of the toughest divisions in the game, the older male dirt sprinters. Two of these will try to win their first stakes race here, while the other three are old pros looking to stay in the game.
Heres the field:
1 Freedom Philosopher
Sire: Heidegger
Dam: Tropical Boom (Boom Site)
Breeder: Millionaire Stables
Owner: Buckeyebred
Picked up at auction in December 06 for $11.110, this four-year-old gelding is a mutliple graded stakes winner with scores in the 6 1/2 furlong Amsterdam (G2) and the Kings Bishop (G1) both at SAR and the Jacobs (G3) at PIM. Seems to be in a slump lately. He comes to this race off a string of three out of the money finishes. Hopes to get back in the win column here and could get there if all goes well. A front runner, he should put that #1 post to good use. Very dangerous if he gets to the lead.
2 Big Hat No Cattle
Breeder: YME Stable
Owner: Angelos Stable
This seven-year-old gelding likes to run up front, too. He took the lead in the early going and pulled away to win by five in his last start, a $80.000 claimer at SA. He has started 31 times in his career and has won a dozen of them. But none of those wins have come at stakes level. Could be a late bloomer. Works are very competitive.
3 DOUBLE DIGIT
Breeder: Track Dream
Owner: Australia Wide
Has looked like a monster in his last few outs. It all started back in February at SA when he won a mile allowance wire-to-wire by seven lengths and scored a career high 108 SRF. Took him a few starts to get back on top in the Triple Bend BC Handicap (G1). Set a turf course record at WO for six furlongs in the Nearctic Stakes (G2). Very versatile - can run on the front or come from behind.
4 Show Business
Owner/Breeder: Alydar Stables
Lightly raced five-year-old has won a maiden and a $80.000 optional allowance, both routing. Tried to step up to stakes level last out in the $75.000 Super Stakes and finished up the track in ninth. Will shorten up here, and could be a threat. Worked six furlongs in 1:11 1/5 over this track a few days ago. Runs with bute for the first time. Could be hurt by lack of stakes experience.
5 Tribal Gold
Owner/Breeder: Paradise Stable
Has been struggling in the very competitive sprint division since a win in the Commonwealth BC (G2) at KEE last April. Won a $40.000 allowance at BM in September and earned a 105 SRF in a track record 1:08.83. Tried three Grade 1s in a row and only hit the board in one, the DeFrancis Memorial Dash (G1) where he finished third by six lengths. Got very close in his last out, the $300.000 SSM Sprint. Took second money, just a length back.Could get his first win of 2008 here if all goes well.
