The stakes schedule at the fall/winter meet at BEU kicks off this Saturday with the $50 Bicker Memorial Handicap. A tiny field of just four fillies and mares will go a mile and one sixteenth on the main track, and I must say, with the exception of one horse, this is truly not a stakes-caliber field. Owners and trainers: Ship stakes horses here! The purses are just fine, and for all you gambling types, we have slots!
Anyway, here's a look at the short field...
#1: FORERUNNER (cornhusker): cornhusker, noted for his tendency to pack fields, enters three here. This one comes in after fading in a cheap claiming event at RD. The worktab is hardly impressive. The only thing going for her is that she's the lone speed in the race, but her stamina is in doubt, and not without justification. No chance.
#2: DANGER ZONE (cornhusker): Has closed like a freight train in his last two starts. They WERE cheap claiming races, but she's probably head and shoulders above her stablemates in here. Will win the race for second money, but finish in a different area code than...
#3: MISS KRISS KROSS (Team 7 Illusions): Team 7 could not have dreamed of a better set-up for this G2-placed filly. She's only finished out of the top two once, and it was in the G2 DEL Handicap. Most recent win was a waltz over high-level allowance company at BEL, and won a minor stakes at SAR three back. There's no beating her today unless she breaks both front legs.
#4: BLANCHE BAY (cornhusker): Ran a late-running second in a starter allowance at RD last out. Another who has severe class hurdles to jump. Her last work going six furlongs was not bad given the slow track, but she'll need to up it a notch to finish within ten of the standout of this field.
