Kirchberg Memorial Handicap

Five will go to the post for the Kirchberg Memorial Handicap on Saturday at BEU, but Joppa and Red Bug look like the class of the field. These two could conceivably battle it out wire-to-wire. Joppa likes the view from the front of the pack, although he has also come from off the pace. Red Bug doesn't have the speed to get to the front in graded company, but in this field he could be up there.

1-Canadian Man

This 3 yo colt has not had a win since Dec 05 but has come close a couple times - most notably the Last Dance at SUF where he finished 3rd. He was 3rd in his last start - an ALW60.00 at BEL on the turf, which he seems to prefer. Last work a less than impressive 1:412 for the mile.
2-Joppa

The one to watch. This 5 yo is looking sharp. Last out he won an ALW40.00 at BM over 1 1/16m. Worked 6f in 1:113 on 11/2 at HOL. His last work was very slow over a soft turf course and the fact that it was a mile and only 3 days before the race could hurt his chances. Best stakes showing to date - finished 4th in the Taliaferro Memorial Stakes at RP at 6f over a track listed as good. He likes them long and has an excellent shot here. Could even wire the field if he is up to form.
3-Red Bug

Graded stakes winner Red Bug won the Bowling Green Handicap-G2 at BEL in June 05 (5th in the same race this year), but hasn't won a stakes race since. His only win this year was a CLM100 at SA. In that race he stalked the pace and went to the lead with a mile to go. He doesn't have the speed out of the gate that Joppa does, but he has the speed to stay close throughout. This step down in class is probably a smart move. He could compete here.
4-Trouble in Town

Trouble in Town, a 3 yo Bay Town colt, finished 2nd in the $1000 CNLTCP on turf at 1 3/16m. He also finished 2nd in the $150 1 1/8 NY Stallion Series, also on turf. In fact, he is 50% ITM on turf and has only 3 starts on dirt in which he finished 6th, 2nd and 4th. Will give it a shot again here and deserves some respect. This 3 yo colt has won $358.35 in 15 starts, but $347.64 of that came on turf.
5-Currently Deployed

Currently Deployed was claimed back in Aug from Scott Stables and switched from Lasix to Bute with some success - ITM 3 of 5 starts since the switch. Won the Fall Stakes at MNR 1 1/8m, then finished 5th and last in the G3 Spend A Buck Handicap at CRC. Back in ungraded company here and should benefit from the drop in class. A 1 1/8 m work on 11/14 could be too close to race day.
