The Turn Back The Alarm Handicap Grade III
For Fillies & Mares Three Year Olds And Upward
Going a Mile and a Sixteenth on the Dirt Course
For a purse of $100.000
at Belmont Park
on Saturday October 29, 2011
This is the third year that the The Turn Back The Alarm Handicap Grade III has been ran at HRP. In the past two years there has been no trainer that has won this race more than once. This is only the second time this race has been run at todays distance. Back in 2010 trainer Ringleader saddled the winner Pariah Kite who holds the race record with a time of 1:42.86. The track record stands at a time of 1:39.73 set by Swordfish and trainer Grendel Ranch set on September 23, 2005. The track has been sloppy there and it looks like there is a possibility of rain on Friday, which means the track could start to dry out. On Saturday it is expected that Belmont Park will receive showers with a 70 percent chance, the trainers can thank the rain for another sloppy day at Belmont Park. Lets look at the 2011 entries
1 Bcc Dancing Duck
Owned by Maverick Racing
Bred by Bcc Racing
Sire Night Call
Dam Girrl Power
Life Record 14-5-3-3
Bcc Dancing Duck absolutely loves the wet and has two wins out of three starts. Three back raced at Belmont Park in the Mother Goose a Grade One event at todays distance. Jockey M C Berry had her on the lead and into the stretch she lost the lead to go on to finish third. She was shipped over to Monmouth Park where she would run at todays distance again in the MTH Oaks Grade III. Jockey C C Lopez missed the break, and quickly they were shuffled back to be eighth. Which this is not typical of her running style. She made a go once to get up to third, but would be shut down to finish sixth. Most recently her owner shipped her to Finger Lakes in an Open Allowance for $24.000 at a mile and seventy yards on the good going dirt. She pressed the pace very quickly coming out of the gate to be a neck back in second. In the stretch rallied to be cleared by two for the win. Now she comes into this race off an Allowance win, but up against a tough field of five other fillies. Do not count her out!
2 Ballroom Dancer
Owned by Angelos Stable
Bred by Deschutes Racing
Sire HRP-Stymie
Dam HRP-Mumtaz Begum
Life Record 10-6-2-0
Ballroom Dancer has never raced over a wet track, so this can pose a difficulty for her and her connections come Saturday. Three back she ran over a mile and an eighth in the VA Oaks Grade III at Colonial. She was out to be fifth, which she did not like. She tried to make a run for it, but would be shut down to finish fifth. Two back she raced at Del Mar at a mile on the sod in the Blue Handicap. SHe was out and placed second, at the half she started to fade to be eighth. She has two failed attempts on the sod, so back to seven furlongs on the main track she would go at Belmont Park. She raced against Optional Claimers $75.000 Non Winners of 4, she broke to be third. At the half mile she had rallied to be place on top, and would be cleared by two. She has not had a win since February of this year. That makes her 0 for 6, which I do not like. I will look elsewhere.
3 Gwanako
Owned by Dynark Stables
Bred by Saratoga Stud
Sire Thornton Mellon
Dam Georgan Singer
Life Record 21-7-4-3
Gwanako has been over a wet track three times in her career. She has a win and a show finish. She has been racing against Graded Stakes company, so lets take a look at how she is handling herself. Three back at todays distance in the slop she ran at Monmouth Park in The Pitcher Stakes a Grade II event. Jon Court placed her on the lead from the break. She managed herself really well throughout the quarters going over the slop. Jon Court set her up for the drive, and she did not have another gear to turn over. She would fade back to finish third. She was then shipped over to TP in the KY Cup Distaff a Grade III event at todays distance. Jockey Mar Pedroza would place her second from the break. At the three quarters of a mile she was second by a nose. He just urged her and there she went to be cleared by one in the lane. She then got shipped over to Keeneland to race in the Spinster Grade I at a mile and an eighth on the dirt. This race was a win and your in for the Breeders Cup. Jon Court was aboard her again, and he did well getting her out of the gate and placed second. At the mile marker she had faded to be fourth by one, and would finish that way. Today she comes back to a mile and a sixteenth, and she is dropping back down to Grade III company which I think is key for her. I like the fact she knows how to win in the wet. She actually won the Grade II The Top Flight Handicap by eight on a muddy surface. She is well prepared for the conditions. Definitely a looker here folks!
4 Formenta
Owned by Aml Racing
Bred by Bayou Star Farms
Sire HRP-Formento
Dam HRP-Ouija
Life Record 10-4-4-1
Formenta was purchased at the June auction for $150.020 from her breeder. This is only her third start for her new owner Aml Racing. Lets take a look at her last two starts. After the purchase her owner sent her down to Louisiana Downs in the LA Cup Oaks at todays distance. This race was for Louisiana Breds. Jockey John Shepherd broke well out of the gate to get her to be second. By the three quarters of a mile he had her on the lead, for her to go on to win. With one win under her belt since the purchase, she was shipped up to Belmont Park where she would make her second start. Kent Desormeaux would take the call. He listen to instructions well as he got her out to be second, when set and ready for the drive, he went out to get her up for the win. Prior to the purchase she had placed second in Graded stakes company four out of four times, so you have to expect her to hit the board.
5 Tornado Jack
Owned by Maxmillion Farm
Bred by 30West
Sire Yukon Jack
Dam Tricky Tornado
Life Record 24-6-3-5
Tornado Jack was purchased back in September 2009 from her breeder for $30.000. She has raced over the wet five times, and she has 1 win, 2 places, and 2 shows. Three back she was at Churchill Downs racing against Optional Claimers $100.000 Non Winners of 4. This race was a six furlongs that would come up sloppy. She was out of the gate to be third, rush up to be second. With a furlong left she was the leader, but would be beat to finish second. From there she would try this same class again at Churchill Downs but this time would stretch out to a mile and an eighth. In a field of four she got out last and would finish in that same fashion. Most recently she was shipped out west to run in a $65.000 Allowance at six and a half furlongs. Tyler Baze would be the captain for the ride. Out of the gate he was last of four with her. In the stretch they rallied to get up to be third. She has not won a race since February and that was on the sod. I like the fact she knows how to win over the wet, but I feel that is about the only thing going for her!
6 Miss Rainbow
Owned by Barcelona Farms
Bred by Maximas
Sire HRP-Rainbow Quest
Dam HRP-Barra
Life Record 13-9-1-2
Miss Rainbow comes into this race with one win out of one start on the wet. Back in June she was purchased from Ken Allan for $301.000 in the auction. She debuted for her new owner at PID in the Northern Fling for Pennsylvania Breds at a mile on the dirt. Willy Martinez would get the ride, and out of the gate would have her fifth. That was no problem for this filly as she rally in the stretch to capture the win. From there she was shipped over to Ellis Park Grade III Gardenia Stakes at a mile on the dirt course. B J Hernandez Jr would get the call. He got her out to be running fourth. Just like her last race she stayed off the pace, and rallied within the stretch to get the win. Now with two wins she would be shipped back to Pennsylvania to Philadelphia Park to face Pennsylvania Breds in the PHBA Distaff and this race would be run at todays distance. She went from last to first over the good main track! She has a lot to like her for this four year old filly. She has had four consecutive wins coming into this race, and has one Grade III victory under her belt, can she make it two?
