The Mohawk Handicap
For Three Year Olds And Upward for New York Breds
Going a Mile and a Sixteenth on the Turf Course
For a purse of $125.000
at Belmont Park
on Saturday October 22, 2011
This is the ninth year that the The Hudson Handicap has been ran at HRP. This race has always been run at a mile and an eighth, this will be the first year that the race will be run at a mile and a sixteenth. The track record stands at a time of 1:38.83 set by Sarong and trainer Power Work set on October 15, 2011. The track has been fast there and it looks like there is a small chance of rain over the next few days, which should not effect the track. Lets look at the 2011 entries
1 Halos Disco
Owned and Bred by Tirstar Stables
Sire HRP-Halo
Dam HRP-Miss Disco
Life Record 4-1-1-0
Halos Disco comes into this race with the least amount of experience compared to the rest of the field. Halos Disco broke his Maiden on the good turf at seven furlongs at first asking at Mountaineer. It would take him two attempts at Allowance Non Winners of 2 races Lifetime at the same distance as his Maiden at Mountaineer to at least get a second place finish. Most recently he shipped up to Belmont Park in a $14.000 Claimer at the same distance as his other three races. In this race he would not fair well to finish seventh. Now he is going to try New York Breds which will be helpful with him. He also is not stretching out to about two turns, and will come out of the shoot at Belmont Park. A lot of variables here, but I do not think he equals the others talent.
2 Need A Marlboro
Owned by Dynark Stables
Bred by Angelos Stable
Sire The Marlboro Man
Dam Who Needs Sleep
Life Record 27-4-12-4
Need A Marlboro was picked up for $15.000. Three starts ago he was at Arlington Park at a mile on the yielding sod in an Allowance for Non Winners of one. He started out in the middle of the pack, and would just miss winning by a head. From there he shipped west to Del Mar to face open allowance company again for Non Winners one. In this race he had the lead all the way throughout the race. In the stretch he gets beat by a neck to finish second. In his last start he was shipped to Saratoga Race Course to face New York Breds in the West Point which was run at todays distance. He got out to be second, and continued to press the pace, and would finish second by a half length. I like that he is returning back to New York Breds, but why can this horse not get up for the win?
3 Commander McBragg
Owned by Calia Stable
Bred by Jerry Garcia Racing
Sire Jacks or Better
Dam Philosophe de Dame
Life Record 37-10-10-4
Commander McBragg was purchased for $6.500 in the September 2011 auction from Two Hearts One Love. Since the purchase he has made one start and it was at Belmont Park at seven furlongs on the sod in Optional Claimers Non Winners of three races. He started in the back of the pack to be seventh in the early going. He had his eye on the prize as he came down the stretch for the win. Prior to that race and this current owner he ran two back at River Downs in a $8.000 Allowance at a mile on the sod and he would finish second. From there he shipped to Mountaineer to race in the mile and seventy yards on the sod in The WV House of Delegates Speakers Cup, and he struggled there to finish fifth. Could be a tough call here.
4 Open Road Song
Owned by Pocket Aces Racing
Bred by Night Mare Racing
Sire Two Jacks
Dam Second System
Life Record 16-4-3-2
Open Road Song was purchased in the September 17, 2010 auction for $23.000. His last three races have been against New York Breds. Three back he ran in the Optional Claimer for Non Winners of Three races at a mile on the turf. He would come up to be fourth here. Next would be his attempt at Saratoga Race Course in the West Point where he would face Need A Marlboro. In this race he was out to be fifth and would finish to be third, right in behind Need A Marlboro. From there he shipped down to Belmont Park to race in the Optional Claimers Non Winners of four races for New York Breds at a mile on the sod. Here he would be able to go from third to the winners circle. He scored a 98 SRF Speed Figure in that race. He could rate well in this class.
5 Streamin Sound
Owned by Team Furey
Bred by Dynark Stables
Sire HRP-Najran
Dam HRP-Itsabet
Life Record 18-6-4-3
Steamin Sound was purchased for $12.500 in a Claimer back on November 1, 2009. Three back he was up at Fort Erie in an Allowance Non Winners of Two Lifetime. In this race he would be covering seven furlongs on the firm sod. He broke well here to rate second out of the gate. It was not until the stretch run that B Bell would get him past to get up for the win. Shipped south to Saratoga Race Course to face open company again in an Allowance for Non Winners of Three Lifetime at a mile on the sod. Broke well out of the gate to be on top, and finish in the same fashion. Then his next start would be against New York Breds in the West Point at todays distance. He would find two entries that were in that race, will be in todays race. He broke to be third out of five horses, and really never made too much of a move. In the stretch he was passed to come up fourth. Has decent SRF Speed Figures, and that makes him good as the rest!
