The Discovery Handicap Grade III
For Three Year Olds
Mile and an Eighth Dirt
Purse: $100.000
At Aqueduct
On Saturday November 19, 2011
The sixth running of the Grade III Discovery Handicap will get underway on Saturday. Last years winner came from the barn of NorthernTraderStables, as the owner sent out Jammer Cat to a nose victory. The race was run in 1:48.71 for the mile and an eighth over the fast track at Aqueduct. This year we have a field of eight starters. So now lets take a look at the boys for Saturday.
1 Smokin Cigar
Owned and Bred by Pumpkin Racing
Jockey: Mike Luzzi
Comes in with three off the board finishes since winning the $70.000 Alydar at
Hollywood
Park in May. In his last start at Woodbine he ran sixth, but only beaten a length in the ONT Derby. He has run five times at this distance, and has won twice. He can handle the distance so can he handle the company? We will see come Saturday.
2 Cannabis Warrior
Owned and Bred by Bush Wackers Of
Ohio
Jockey: C.C Lopez
A winner of two in a row will make his first attempt at Stakes Competition. Beating N1X at Finger Lakes and
Philadelphia
Park will also try getting Saturdays distance of a mile and an eighth. He is a lightly raced colt and seems like being on the lead. Winning three of the four times he has gotten the front. If he can get an easy lead anything is possible for him.
3 N Y Minute
Owned and Bred by
Paradise Stable
Jockey: Ryan Curatolo
Another colt that comes out of the ONT Derby at Woodbine. A third place finish in that race, as he finished a length behind the winner. In his four starts at the distance he has a place and a third, but also two off the board finishes. All four though have been close and got to think he will be close on Saturday.
4 Melon Collie
Owned by
Barcelona Farms
Jockey: Javier Castellano
The winner of the ONT Derby at Woodbine, as he nosed out his competition. Now a winner of four in a row will look to make it five on Saturday in the Grade III Discovery Handicap. Also two for two at the distance he has been on a roll, and may be the one to beat come Saturday.
5 Art For Success
Owned by Threshold
Jockey: David Cohen
A winner in seven of his twelve lifetime starts took back to the sod to run in the Grade III Hawthorne Derby. His start before that last one he won easily at
Saratoga beating Allowance Company by four lengths at the mile and an eighth distance. He won up at
Saratoga in 1:48 and change and if can run back to that he will be a contender on Saturday.
6 Go For Whisky
Owned by Riggins Racing
Jockey: Junior Alvarado
Moves back to the main track on Saturday after falling apart in his first start for the owner. Running on sod in the Grade III Hawthorne Derby and finishing ninth will hope to run like he did when winning the Grade I Arkansas Derby back in April at this distance. That was the only time he went that far on the dirt and will look to run like that come Saturday.
7 Exceedingly Heroic
Owned and Bred by Nakamura Stables
Jockey: Rajiv Maragh
Makes a move to the dirt on Saturday for the first time since running seventh and off the board in his debut. A winner in three of his last four starts on the sod, just missed last time out at
Philadelphia
Park against N2X by a head. He also makes his first start against Stakes Company. He has a tough task come Saturday returning to the dirt, as well and will need to run super run.
8 Shoot The Brees
Owned by Some Devil Racing
Jockey: Ed Castro
A winner of two in a row against Stakes Company will look to keep that streak going on Saturday. He is having a great year to date winning now four times in 2011 and finishing second four times as well. He has won his last two from on the lead and looks to get an easy lead if possible. He rounds out our eight entries for the Grade III Discovery Handicap.
