Second Jewel Goes North Of The Border

Calia Stables North Of The Border stormed to the front at the top of the stretch to capture the GR-1 $1000.000 Prk Stakes on Saturday evening at PIM. Under direction of GK Gomez North Of The Border got an ideal stalking trip that ultimately set the stage for the biggest win of his career. Breaking from the four hole North Of The Border found himself third behind the early leader Misterkatesmith (Calia Stables) and Generalmajor (Jerry Garcia Racing) as the horses passed midway through the clubhouse turn. Once settled down the backstretch North Of The Border was in ideal shape about two lengths off the leader Misterkatesmith. Generalmajor continued in second, Derby winner Half Spirit was in tight along the rail with Wild Bill right there on the outside shoulder of North Of The Border. The horses pretty much stayed in those positions going into the far turn. North Of The Border surged to the lead with a little more than a quarter of a mile to go. By the time they hit the 3/16th pole North Of The Border had a clear two length lead that opened to about a three length advantage at the eighth pole. A late surge by Echo Wave who moved into second did not pose any threat to the winner.

The win by North Of The Border improved his record to 2 wins in five 2008 starts and boosted his earnings to $1,065.300 for the year. Both his wins are in Gr-1 Company. He had captured the BG Stakes at KEE in April with an impressive 100 SRF speed figure for the 1-1/8m distance. He did not run well in the Derby after drawing the 17th post position which evidently compromised his chances. However he redeemed himself today by showing that his 100 SRF in the BG Stakes was no fluke. His final time for the 1-3/16 PRK Stakes was 1:55 1/5 which earned him another 100 SRF.

Finishing second was the Derby runner-up Echo Wave (Desha Farms), the second place finish was his third in a row which included the Derby and the BG Stakes. Finishing third was Hidden Scriptures with the Derby winner Half Spirit finishing fourth about five lengths behind the winner.

*A full recap of the PRK Stakes will be found in the Sunday evening edition of the SRF
