LAPN Sprint
2/4/2012 DED Race #5 5f Dirt Stake
Purse $100.00 For Four-Year Olds And Upward Foaled In LA
Among the eight stakes featured this Saturday at DED is the inaugural running of the LAPN Sprint. This five-furlong dirt event features four -year -old and up LA state breds. A quality field of five turned out for this event.
Highlighting the field is Riggins Racing gelding Bound For Victory. The former claimer is primarily a turf sprinter and ships in off four straight wins as he climbs up the class ladder. His competitors include stakes winners Sexy Letters and Royal Abs; state bred racing veteran Montpelier and Goodnight Saigon, a regular on the allowance circuit.
Here is the field:
1 Goodnight Saigon Alydar Stables Marquez C L 123 This five-year-old son of Black Moon is a veteran of twenty-five races. A regular on the allowance circuit, he tried stakes twice before with no luck. He can run short on up to a mile, but seems to do his best at six furlongs. He usually closes, as his opening fractions are not as fast as some. He runs shorter here and draws the inside. He may need to break sharp here to avoid being swallowed up by the speed on his outside.
2 Royal Abs Maxmillion Farm Vazquez J L 125 This four-year-old gelded autogen was developed by Riggins Racing and claimed in June of 2010 for $40.000 by his current connections. A regular on the statebred circuit, he won five LA stakes so far in his career. Normally he races from six furlongs to a mile dirt. He usually stalks the leaders and is not known for gate blasting abilities. However, that can be said for a few in this race that are shortening up for this event. Recent bullet five-furlong dirt preps should have him prepped for race day.
3 Bound For Victory Riggins Racing Simington D E 123 This five-year-old gelded autogen horse was developed by the owner. A good-looking fellow, he ships in off a four-race win streak, all done on five furlongs turf. He raced just once before on the dirt and finished out of the money. That was earlier this year however, and it was a stakes race following his maiden debut win. He worked two bullets in: 57 and change and gives every indication his speed on turf will translate to the dirt. As the only true short sprint specialist in the race, he will be the horse to beat.
4 Sexy Letters Double J Stables Melancon G 123 This five-year-old gelded son of Spicy Dani was bred by the owner. Another versatile runner than can switch up distances and surfaces, his only stakes win so far came at a mile turf in the LA bred Erwin stakes. More recently, he raced at six furlongs dirt, picking up two wins and two places last year. Normally a closer, he is another one not known for fast early fractions and will need to step up to catch any early speed in time.
5 Montpelier Sarah Stables Saenz D 123 This five-year-old son of Villanova was bred by the owner. This very consistent horse seems to improve with age. He missed the board just four times in his nineteen-race career. He is one of only two here that shows early speed. He raced twice before in statebred stakes and finished third both times. He draws the outside here which could be a big boost as lately most jockeys are pushing their horses fast to angle inside. If successful, that move here could get clear of the others and right up in contention with the other speed horse, #3 Bound For Victory.
