The 9th Annual BC Ladies Classic- Recap

_________________________________________________________________________________

Last season, horseplayers alike thought that when Mrs Bombastic beat the event record by some better then two seconds, that it would be a record that could stand the test of time. Little did she know the following season a four year old bay who she had beaten in this very event last season by two lengths would look for redemption, and steal the crown away.

For Pumpkin Racing's Millionaire Heiress ( 18.55 ) who was let go at some decent odds come post time, she was content to sit back of the pace in the early going, dropping back after a clean break from the gate, and take up along the rail going into the clubhouse turn. As she entered the backstretch, she found herself six and a half lengths off an impressive frontrunner by the name of Roundheel ( 20.75 ) who would have to get to the rail quickly from her extreme fourteenth stall out of the gate. Jockey Flores was in complete control of his mount as he had used this style of attack back in the Gr. II Milady BC Hdcp and the Gr. II A Gleam Hdcp going a shorter distance.

As the field approached the far turn, Roundheel ( Sarah Stables ) was joined on the frontend by Angelos Stable's Mels Silver Crush ( 46.85 ) who had managed to keep herself out of any traffic danger to this point. Millionaire Heiress and Flores were seeing a slightly fading Mrs Bombastic ( 2.75 ) to her outside and decided to get in front of the Barcelona Farm entry to have a clear path to the outside coming off the turn for home. It seemed that Millionaire Heiress was not content to wait till the top of the stretch, as the Tennesse Jed filly tugged on the reins in Flores hands and her jockey knew she was ready to run.

Going to the outside of runners through the midway point of the turn, Flores was able to steady his mount just slightly enough to get her on her right lead at the quarter pole, and then he knew he was just along for the ride, as the filly was now determined to give it her all. Up to three and three quarters back at the three sixteenth pole, then closing to two and a half by the eighth pole. With a sixteenth to run, Millionaire Heiress was now alongside the three frontrunners of the field, as Dynark Stables Blow Me To The Moon ( 19.50 ) was stalking the two frontrunners to their outside and had closed to within a half length.

Never really having to go to the whip, Flores commented after the race, " She ( Millionaire Heiress ) let me know in the far turn who was in charge at that point, and with just setting her right at the top of the lane, she did all the work. I was just enjoying the ride!! " Since getting back in the irons back in May after a failing attempt in the Gr. I Alabama last season, Flores has now guided Millionaire Heiress to a record of six starts ( 4-1-1 ). This is Pumpkin Racings first ever BC Title. CONGRATULATIONS.

" This is the best Millionaire Heiress there could have been leading up to this race, and she proved it," trainer for Pumpkin Racing informed me as he made his way down from his box to the track surface. " I knew she was fast, but she made it look easy. Thank goodness she stay clear of traffic. " As he disappeared amongst patrons who were patting him on the back in congratulations, I heard a loud Woohoooo from the crowd, knowing full well he was delighted with the outcome. The victory now brings her career total to 26 starts ( 11-6-2 ) with career earnings of $3103.020, and a route record of 19 ( 8-5-1 ), accounting for a seventy four ITM percentage.

For runner-up Roundheel who had to overcome her extreme outside post position, trainer Robert from Sarah Stables summed it up perfectly. " I cant say I went into the race feeling good about running any of my 3 year olds vs. older horses in the BC races. But I felt that they earned the spots to represent my stable in racing biggest day." To which he added with a chuckle, " In other words it was a pleasant surprise! " I asked why he went with the change to E Prado after having such success with C Fraser in the tack, to which he replied, " Fraser has been very good to me but with such a big race I chose to use a more proven jockey for the big dance hoping that they might push her to her limits. I guess you could call that a lucky guess." I personally think it was a trainers instinct to get the best out of his entry. As for the day, Robert told me, " Overall today was a great day for the barn with 2 seconds and a fourth out of 4 starts against the very best horses of the year and many of the top trainers in the game." Keep in mind she is still just a sophomore and she did just miss last season by a head in the Gr. I BC Juvenile Fillies where she cashed the same size check as today. In just two seasons, she has amassed a total of 1902.940 in earnings, has a record of 17 ( 7-6-2 ) and 2012 is just around the corner, so stay tune for the sequel.

Rounding out a $2396.100 trifecta of ( 3-14-10 ), Mels Silver Crush was keeping the overall pace and Roundheel, honest on the frontend. Never backing down since the clubhouse turn, the Angelos Stable grey sophomore put another notch in the ability of this seasons three year olds to be a factor against older company, and tougher competition. One who had taken on the grass last season in the BC Juvenile Turf to finished fourth, she seemed to be lacking interest after two brilliant efforts in the Spring against Gr. I company. I asked Angelos Stable's trainer how he felt about her finish and did she live up to her abilities on the day? " She didnt really ship well on the horse van, as we were looking for a win, but are still satisfied with the results." Jockey Berry has guided her to a record of ( 3-1-2 ) in eight starts and her seasonal earnings are now at $1353.000. She has definitely made a sweet return on the slightly better then $95.000 that was spent at Auction in the Spring of 2010.

A look at the rest of the field in order of finish;

9- Blow Me To The Moon  Takes the minor share of the purse and was looking like she was starting to make ground on the duelling pair at the eight pole, but just came up a little short as the she couldnt find just a little more.

4- Antiquated Idea   ( Team Furey ) decided to use a stalking approach after traffic looked to get a bit busy into the opening turn, then failed to fire in the final sixteenth to make up any ground.

12- Mrs Bombastic   ( Barcelona Farms ) was in trouble through the opening turn as she dropped back quickly to the far turn, then found her footing once again at the top of the lane to charge a bit too late.

7- Lucy Van Pelt-  (Yahudi Stables ) Sat mid pack early on, then came alongside Antiquated Idea at the top of the stretch, but was unable to keep pace with the frontrunners late.

5- Rhythm Line -  ( Paradise Stable ) was some 15 + lengths back in the early going and when she finally did decide to put in a run, she ran out of track quickly.

1- Forty Carrots- ( Mwn Racing ) Tried to get to the outside off the turn for home, but was pressed by the eventual winner to her outside and stayed consistent to the line, five back.

11- Jersey Dream- ( Paradise Stable ) was able to obtain the rail for her homestretch run, but faded late and was never a factor.

6- Guided By Angels- ( Dynark Stables ) Dropped back some eleven lengths in early running and was only able to gain minimal ground late.

13 Time Box-  ( Ken Allan ) Was some ten or better length back of the frontrunner through the event.

2- Fiore-( 88 Jayhawk ) Out from the onset

8-Better Miss- ( Alydar Stables ) Fell back early with Rhythm Line, then made up just minor ground in the lane.
